Why I’m Happy SHOP.CA Is Coming

I’ve been complaining about the hassles of cross-bordering Shopping for years! I always tell my American friends how much easier they have it. They can enter practically every giveaway in the blogosphere without having to worry about eligibility and Shop online at almost every major retailer without having to worry if they will ship to them. Meanwhile, I have to inspect every potential retailer I am interested to see if they even ship to Canada and if they do, are their shipping charges astronomical. It’s annoying and I’m tired.

Even when you do find a retailer who ships to Canada, there are still many issues that can come up.  For starters, there’s the hidden costs. I can count on both hands how many times the courier has shown up at my doorstep saying, “please sign here and oh there’s a $66 brokerage fee that you need to pay before we can give you your package”!?! Normally I just would pay the fee if it was a product that I really really wanted. For instance, I had a Kindle Fire shipped to me from the US last month. It came with a $66 brokerage fee!! I really wanted the Kindle Fire so I ended up paying it, but I was not a happy camper.

Other times, I’ve simply returned to sender. I received a $20 product via courier. They wanted me to pay $30 in brokerage fees. I told them no I wouldn’t pay a fee that was more than the actual product was worth and sent it back. That just did not make any sense whatsover to me!

I have asked the courier delivery person and at the Post Office why some parcels come through with fees and others don’t. I was basically told that they did not know and it really depended on who was working that day at Customs. Needless to say, I’m very confused on how they decide what fees to charge. It feels like a gamble every time I order something from the US.

These hassles are one of the reasons why I’m so excited for SHOP.CA to come to Canada. I’m holding off on purchasing a few items on my list until it opens up in May.
