Rob Marshall and Disney to Develop Into the Woods as a Feature Film
The acclaimed Broadway Musical Into the Woods is set to be directed by Rob Marshall and will include the original music by Stephen Sondheim. Walt Disney Studios will be producing it with the production company LUCAMAR Productions. The original stage musical writer, James Lapine, has been brought onboard to write the screen adaptation.
Some of Rob Marshall’s most recent work includes Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. That film performed terrifically at the box office, becoming the 8th highest grossing film of all time and the #3 film of 2011. He has also worked on the screen adaptation of Chicago as well as the book-to-film adaptation of Memoirs of a Geisha. Both films went on to win multiple Academy awards.
Into the Woods combines several well-known fairy tales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel) into an original story about a baker and his wife who want nothing more than to have a child. However, their family is under a curse and they must lift it in order to find their own “happily ever after”.
