Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
About the Book:
Julia Lapp has planned on marrying Paul Fisher since she was a girl. Now twenty-one, she looks forward to their wedding with giddy anticipation. When Paul tells her he wants to postpone the wedding–again–she knows who is to blame. Perpetual bachelor and spreader of cold feet, Roman Troyer, the Bee Man.
Roamin’ Roman travels through the Amish communities of Ohio and Pennsylvania with his hives full of bees, renting them out to farmers in need of pollinators. He relishes his nomadic life, which keeps him from thinking about all he has lost. He especially enjoys bringing his bees to Stoney Ridge each year. But with Julia on a mission to punish him for inspiring Paul’s cold feet, the Lapp farm is looking decidedly less pleasant.
Can Julia secure the future she’s always dreamed of? Or does God have something else in mind?
About the Author:
Her interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. She has many, many Plain relatives living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and travels back to Pennsylvania, as well as to Ohio, a couple of times each year for research.
Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world. In both her fiction and non-fiction books, she has an underlying theme: You don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles–simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily– into your life.
When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grandbaby (!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.

This is my fourth book I’ve read by this particular author and I’m a fan of her other books. I had high hopes for The Keeper and I can say that it did not disappoint. This book is a beautifully written story of an Amish family who are going through a hard time with money, love and health issues.
At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Julia Lapp and her upcoming plans to wed Paul Fisher. I was surprised when Paul cancelled their wedding and I felt Julia’s pain. I could only imagine how awful she felt inside and the callous way Paul broke it off made me right off the bat not like his character. When I found out he was cheating with Julia’s best friend, Lizzie, I disliked him even further and was disgusted by him. It bothered me to see Julia so in love with Paul when he was really a jerk.
This is a story of many characters and we see the story from all of their perspective. The book does jump around quite frequently from each of the characters including that of MK (the youngest child of the Lapp family), Sadie (the 15 year old sister of Julia), Roman (the Bee Man) and many others. They were all likable characters and I loved being able to get to know each of them.
Fern Graber, the housekeeper, who comes to help out Amos Lapp and the family is one I didn’t like right away but as the story went on, my fondness for her grew. She is tough and no nonsense on the exterior but has a good heart and cares about the family and their wellbeing. I liked how she helped Sadie feel more confident and helped her to lose weight.
I would say this is more a story of the characters over a fast paced story. The story moved slowly, but this allowed the reader to really get to know the characters. If you like Amish Fiction, this book is one you should pick up!
