GIVING THANKS (Written and narrated by Chief Jake Swamp, illustrated by Erwin Printup Jr.) Known as the Thanksgiving Address, this Native American good morning message is based on the belief that the natural world is a precious and rare gift – from the moon and the stars to the tiniest blade of grass.
HIAWATHA (By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, illustrated by Susan Jeffers) Hiawatha’s boyhood is gracefully brought to life against a background of authentic Native American music in this excerpt from Longfellow’s classic poem.
THE PILGRIMS OF PLIMOTH (Written and illustrated by Marcia Sewall) The arrival of the Pilgrims in the new world is chronicled in this dramatic reenactment of their daily activities during those first trying years in the colony they called Plimoth.
LINCOLN AND DOUGLASS: AN AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP (By Nikki Giovanni, illustrated by Bryan Collier, narrated by Danny Glover) The story of an unusual, historic friendship between two great American leaders – Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
I am teaching my young children about Thanksgiving and our American heritage so I was delighted to view the Scholastic Storybook Treasures® featuring Giving Thanks and more stories on DVD. Giving Thanks is an educational and entertaining DVD and it is a wonderful way for my children to appreciate history and learn more about the value of friendship in each of these wonderful stories.
I was particularly impressed with the beautiful illustrations by Susan Jeffers as well as the mesmerizing Native American music in Hiawatha. My children sat spell bound watching and listening to this story written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and they immediately wanted to learn more about Native American culture.
We have read several books this month about the Pilgrims so my children were delighted to see the arrival of the Pilgrims in the new world “come to life” in this historical re-enactment. During our next school session, each of my children wanted to re-tell the story aloud of The Pilgrims of Plymouth and even put on a show for their dad that night.
Lincoln & Douglass: An American Friendship by Nikki Giovanni was a very interesting historical story centered on the friendship of two great men. It opened up a discussion with my six year old son who wanted to learn more about Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
The Scholastic Storybook Treasures® DVD collection features read-along captioning which is perfect for my four, five and six year old early readers. Scholastic Storybook Treasures® also promotes early reading skills with read-along DVDs. I have noticed an improvement in my six year old son’s reading abilities since he began watching this series and I love that he tries to read the text along with the narration. Our collection of Scholastic Storybook Treasures® is an excellent resource for our home school curriculum because it is not only entertaining but educational too.
You are invited to visit the New Kideo website to purchase Giving Thanks on DVD (SRP $14.95) or to view the entire collection of Scholastic Storybook Treasures® titles.
