Did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association, “cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries” but only “25% of U.S. households have a fire extinguisher on hand to help contain or extinguish a small fire.”? As the mother of a young son who has suffered horribly from a burn accident with injuries related to 3rd and 2nd degree burns to his tiny body, I am passionate about promoting fire safety. However, I was mortified to realize that even our home is one of the 75% that does not have a fire extinguisher in case of a kitchen fire.
Kidde is proud to have developed a Kitchen Fire Extinguisher that is “the only unit listed to meet the recently added UL 711A standard that tests the performance of the unit on vegetable and peanut oil, both very common cooking ingredients in American kitchens.” My husband immediately placed the Kidde Fire Extinguisher in an easy to access location within our kitchen and we read the instructions so that we would know how to use it in case of a kitchen fire. The Kidde kitchen fire extinguisher is designed so that it is easy to use and allows for “simple one-handed operation.” There is also a pressure gauge that my husband checked to verify that the extinguisher is “charged and ready to use” giving us added peace of mind. Stovetop fires present a challenge for splashing grease so Kidde has designed this extinguisher with a “proprietary nozzle design to help minimize splashing hazards when fighting stovetop fires.” This model is ready for a single use event and I appreciate that it is compact and does not take up a lot of space in our kitchen. While I hope that we never experience a kitchen fire, we are ready with a plan of action in the event that one occurs.
Kidde also has the Intelligent Alarm which monitors for smoke, fire and carbon monoxide. What makes this alarm so unique is that it uses a voice alarm and combines 2 sensors into one alarm so that it is able to “detect fires faster.” While we have a primary wired alarm system, I really like this as an additional back up because it is battery operated so it works during power outages and lightening storms offering additional protection. My husband likes that it is easy to install and it has not had any annoying false alarms.
If you live in a two story house, do you have a fire escape ladder? If not, you might want to consider the Kidde KL-2S Two-Story Fire Escape Ladder with Anti-Slip Rungs. This affordable escape ladder is designed to be easy to use and attaches quickly to most common windows. These ladders are also very durable and reportedly hold up from 750- 1000 pounds. I am impressed with how little space this model takes up when it is not in use and it is recommended that one be kept in every 2nd story room in case of emergency. You can purchase the Kidde KL-2S Two-Story Fire Escape Ladder in 13 foot or 25 foot models.
I am very impressed with the quality and affordability of fire protection products by Kidde that is available for families. It is my hope that by promoting fire safety and sharing my child’s personal story, if I can prevent even one child or adult from suffering a fire related injury then it is all worth it!
