Interesting graphic. It really points out how there is often a tradeoff between money and convenience when it comes to raising a baby. However, I do have a problem with the stay at home mom vs nanny childcare bit. Stay at home mom childcare is actually often an even more expensive endeavor than nanny childcare. You have to factor in to the monetary equation the opportunity cost of the mother staying at home. That is, you have to take into account what income the mother would have made were she not a stay at home mom. In many (if not most) cases, the woman’s salary would be more than a nanny’s salary, meaning that a nanny is actually less expensive than a stay at home mom. This is strictly monetary, of course. There are obviously emotional factor that will make a family decide on a stay at home mom or a nanny. I am just trying to point out that considering stay at home mom childcare to be $ in comparison to nanny childcare being $$$ is not the most accurate representation in a society where women can be educated and can hold jobs.
This is a very useful chart! I’m going to share if with my pregnant friend.
Thank you. An interesting read.
I don’t think I’ve seen this type of comparison before. I breast fed because it was the best I could do for my baby. Yet, your article helps me consider all different ways to consider how to deal with difficult issues. My mom and dad, now retired, are very anxious to help with baby sitting yet I don’t know if we can trust them. So much to consider! Thanks again…. Leah
Thanks for sharing this useful chart!
Interesting read I shared with my friend whos due in July
