Book Review | Blogging Success: Tips for Creating Content, Getting Traffic and Monetizing Your Blog

In the past six months I’ve read every blogging ebook I could find! This is what I do for a living now so I want to learn as much as I can about blogging. Since there’s no college diploma for blogging, these resource books are the next best thing. I recently read Blogging Success: Tips for Creating Content, Getting Traffic and Monetizing Your Blog by Holly Reisem Hanna and am adding it to my list of must-read books about blogging. Even though I’ve been blogging for three years, I still came away with fresh information and new ideas on how to improve my site.

The book is 44 pages long and divided into four sections:

  • Creating Content
  • Getting Traffic
  • Monetization Techniques
  • Blogging Success Stories

Holly starts out by saying that blogging is not something you will get rich quick at. This is so true! Too many people get into blogging just for the money and I agree it’s not something that will happen overnight for the most of us. Even for me, I didn’t start to make a living on my blog until this year! Trust me, it’s not easy!

I agree with all her tips on how to create content. She talks about the tone of your posts, pictures, your niche, and even your blog design. I’ve already begun to implement a number of her suggestions!

In the Getting Traffic section, she discusses the various sources of traffic for your site. Some of them I knew already and had been using for sometime like Facebook and Twitter. However, there was a number of them that I weren’t familiar with like Article Marketing and how to make your own ebook. There’s a few on the list that I am going to work into my blog marketing plan to see how they pan out for me!

In Monetization Techniques, Holly mentions that you should NOT be using a free blogging platform if you want to earn money from your site. For me, I didn’t really start making money on my site until I moved to self-hosted WordPress and my own domain. She also talks about multiple income sources for your site including Direct Sales, Ad Networks (she has a big list of them!), Giveaways, Affiliate Marketing and a few others. I was most interested in her list of Ad Networks because there was a number of them that I’d never heard of and am want to investigate more.

In Section Four, she interviews successful bloggers to find out the secrets to their success. I was especially intrigued by Laura Wittmann’s interview because she is a Canadian and I met her last year at Blissdom Canada. She owns the blog I’m an Organizing Junkie and just published a book, Clutter Rehab!

This ebook is organized and easy to read. It’s a great resource for new bloggers who want to learn more about blogging and making it into something profitable down the road. I wish would have this book when I started out. It would have saved me so much time and stress!
