Saturday Featured Blog: Sammi’s Blog of Life
Welcome to Simply Stacie’s Saturday Featured Blog!
Today I would like to welcome Sammi from Sammi’s Blog of Life. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
I’m a 20 something girl living in New York City. I am seeking a full time job while working a series of odd jobs/internships in the meantime, as I graduated college last May. I love to have fun, go shopping, hang out with my friends, and just enjoy the city.
Please tell me about your blog.
I started it in December 2009 and it is truly my favorite thing in the world. I spend about 25 hours working on it a week (on top of working almost 40 hours at my “real” jobs!). It’s something I’m so proud of and it’s definitely a conversation starter. I’ve always been a big fan of consumer products and it’s awesome to be able to give my thoughts on them and have other people read them from all over the world!
How long have you been blogging?
I’ve had a livejournal over the years, but not sure that really counts. This blog is the first official blog I’ve ever had though.
How did you get started?
I was working at an internship in the summer of 2009. I had to research mom blogs for a blog project I was working on. I had very little exposure to mom blogs at that point. I do remember wondering how they got all of the items to review, and I was very intrigued. I knew I wanted to start a blog, but did not know how to go about it at all. I wasn’t a mom and wasn’t interested in reviewing child products, but was interested in reviewing items I was interested in (skincare, food, electronics, etc.)
I won a blog contest from a very popular blog in December 2009. I thought to myself “what the heck, let me ask this person how I can get started blogging. It’s worth a shot, right?” Well, the blogger not only gave me advice but designed my entire blog for me! I was speechless and couldn’t get over the generosity. I had no idea how to do HTML at all (and barely do now!) so it was extremely helpful. I started pitching and worked my way up and it’s been one heck of a ride ever since!!
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
Skincare, electronics, food, fashion, and more. Sometimes I even do restaurant reviews. I am a unique blogger as I not a mom, and I stand out from all the other mom blogs as I don’t review childrens products.
What was your favourite giveaway?
I’d say my first giveaway ever, for Kaponga skincare. I was so beyond excited to be able to offer a giveaway, and I remember just loving all of the entries and the buzz.
Who does your blog appeal to?
Women mostly, but I get my fair share of males who enter too. I’d say my blog appeals to a mass audience, women and men from the ages of 18-60. Who can’t use a coupon for a free bag of pretzels or a gift certificate for a restaurant? I love that the blog can reach a mass demographic at the same time.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
I’m hoping I gain many more followers and am featured in the press more. I was interviewed in the newspaper for an article for a product I reviewed last month. It was very exciting and I would love to be featured again. I hope to be contacted by even more companies on a larger scale and hope to be able to review many big ticket items.
I also hope to establish more relationships with companies and PR contacts.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
I think the biggest challenge would be being turned down for a review for a product you really want to review. You may not have enough followers or your traffic may not be high enough, but don’t give up. Keep in contact with the brand and hopefully you will grow and be able to review the product in no time!
What do you love about blogging?
The connection that I have with my readers. I offer products for giveaways that I know my readers will love. I make a list of what is successful and what isn’t as sucessful to keep my readers interested. I love that people from all over the world (and beyond) are looking at my blog. It’s so incredible to know that people are interested in you and keep coming back to read it! Watching my follower list grow is the best feeling in the world.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
Yes. I don’t understand when a blogger does a review and does not actually review the product. For example, you received a cake for review. The blogger writes a review somewhat along the lines of “the cake was amazing, my family loved it and we highly recommend it!”. In my opinion, this is not a review. You are not telling the taste, describing the texture, the smell, and what you actually think of the cake’s exterior. The review is so broad and general that it would not catch my eye and I would think the blogger didn’t actually review the cake.
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?
I would say don’t be afraid to enter, you could win! I know some people say that it’s not worth entering because they will not win. You never know, maybe you will win this contest! Try doing some of my bonus entries to garner more entries in the contest. Ask any questions you might have. Don’t be afraid to voice your thoughts.
Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
My favorite mom blogs are Mom2my6pack.com, SimplyStacie.com (I really do love your blog!), and DearCrissy.com. Those are really the only blogs I read.
