SOAR Study Skills Review
The new school year can bring about dreaded homework battles which can ultimately lead to frustration for students and their parents. In my experience, parents want to help their child manage homework and get better grades but are not quite sure where to start. Students with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD may have a particular set of additional challenges that are also addressed by SOAR® with special tips for student, parents and educators.
SOAR® Study Skills was developed by Susan Kruger, M.Ed. who is a certified teacher and learning specialist. Her goal was to create a system that will help build the student’s confidence, motivate and ease homework hassles by teaching them how to learn. In my opinion she has succeeded with SOAR® Study Skills, a four-step program that covers key areas such as time and task-management, goal-setting, paper organization, homework/project planning, reading skills, note-taking and test-taking strategies, communication skills and writing strategies.
Middle school through college students are sure to be empowered after reading this comprehensive manual, SOAR® Study Skills. I was very impressed with amount of information covered in this guide yet it wasn’t boring or overwhelming. This manual is engaging and asks pertinent study related questions while seeking the student’s feedback and provides manageable solutions that are applicable to the student’s everyday life.
The SOAR™ Organizational Supply Kit is an excellent resource to accompany the SOAR® Study Skills manual. It includes the SOAR™ Binder System and Pendaflex® Desk-Free Hanging Organizer.
The SOAR™ Binder System is a wonderful binder that will enable the student to practice their newly acquired skills and keep their school work and home work organized. This 1 inch binder system utilizes plastic one-pocket folders and loose leaf notebook papers that are later transferred to the Home Filing System. From a teacher’s perspective, the SOAR™ Binder System is ingenious. I home educate my three children and have a massive amount of papers at the end of every day that end up misplaced or lost. After assembling and using my SOAR™ Binder I have become more organized and much less frustrated thus leading to better time management and less frustration.
The Pendaflex® Desk-Free Hanging Organizer is a great way to for students (and educators or parents) to organize papers conveniently and it also converts easily into a carrying case! At the end of the week, I sort through all of our school papers which are either placed into our school portfolio or thrown away.
SOAR™ Homework Help! For Parents includes a set of three audio CD’s that are designed to help weary parents learn valuable strategies to end the “homework wars” and establish a positive learning environment. I highly appreciate that this audio program obviously takes into account that parents are busy and it delivers its messages and strategies effectively without being boring or tedious. Each CD has numerous short topic areas that make it easy to listen to this in sections depending on your time availability. I really liked the sections on Time Management for Families, Organizing-Elementary School Students, Cut Homework Time/Increase Productivity, Using Rewards and Incentives and Tex-Book Reading Activity. I find this particular audio CD program to be an invaluable addition to our home school environment and highly recommend it to any parent who wants to have a home environment conducive to learning.
