Saturday Featured Blog | Family and Life in Las Vegas
Welcome to Simply Stacie’s Saturday Featured Blog!
Today I would like to welcome Emily from Family and Life in Las Vegas. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
I am a 29 year old, East-coast born, Midwestern raised girl living in the Wild West… okay maybe not so wild, but Vegas is way different than Chicago. In addition to being a wife and mother (which I absolutely adore!), I love cake, reading, being in the water, shopping, and I have a horrible addiction to diet coke. (More recently thanks to Nutrisystem, I have cut back on the cake, and am hoping to quit my diet coke addiction soon!!)
My hubs and I have been together for about 7 years now, and married in 2008. I couldn’t love him more (save the time he left the toilet seat up, and a pregnant me fell in…) He makes me laugh at myself when I want to cry and puts up with all my crap but still calls me out on it too.
Together we have a toddler I call Squish on my blog. He is sweet, cute, and charming, and he knows it! I am a SAHM, and try to fill our days with family friendly activities all while beating the Vegas heat.
The Hubs is frequently deployed overseas for several months at a time for his job. So about 1/3-1/2 the year I am a single mom (and have mad respect for those who are full time single moms!).
Please tell me about your blog.
Haha – better question is what is it not about! Basically it is about raising my family in Las Vegas. I am a baby-wearing, cloth diapering, organic mom, who makes mistakes just like the next mama. I tend write a ton about my Squishy, and could probably write more! I like to share things that make my life as a wife and mother easier or just more fun. (Read Family friendly reviews and giveaways)
I started and co-host a meme called Toddler Talk – a place for parents/caregivers of toddlers to link up and post about weekly topics. Basically to share and to give/get advice for parents who know what life with a toddler is like.
I also co-host a Friday Follow meme called Bee Friendly. This one is just about having fun, and finding other great blogs.
How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging when my son was 1 month old. (July of 2009) Here is my first ever post!
How did you get started?
We live in Las Vegas for the Hubs job, but all of our family is still mainly in the mid-west and FL. Squish is the first grand-baby on both sides, so I wanted to make sure they had a place to follow the goings-on. When the Hubs deployed the first time ASq (After Squish) I wanted him to be able to know what we were doing on a day-to-day basis. Eventually I started to incorporate bits of me in the blog. I realized I had missed writing, and really enjoyed it. I liked sharing what worked for me, and learning from others. Also I truly feel that blogging during that first deployment after Squish was born kept me from very seriously losing it. I was so sleep-deprived, and had no family here to help. I was exhausted, and writing kept me sane. Suddenly my family blog turned into a great mish-mash of my crazy life in Las Vegas and how we make it work.
I also started a breastfeeding blog www.simplegiftstories.blogspot.com, where breastfeeding mamas could share their experiences.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
Family Friendly products, or momma friendly products. Basically it will be really rare to find a bad review on my blog, bc if I don’t think it will work for my family, I pass on it. I really try to keep true to my blog mantra “I love to write and write what I love.”
What was your favourite giveaway?
I have a bunch, but I have really enjoyed working with RubaDub Buddies! Hooded towels. I found her because I actually asked her to make a caterpillar bath towel, and let me tell you – it is pretty stinking adorable!
Who does your blog appeal to?
I would say mostly families. Or women. Anyone who loves children and also those who are new to the greening lifestyle like me.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
That is a great question – I actually just did a post about this.
I want to focus on family blogging more. I want something my child can look back on and read about what things were like when he was a toddler…
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
Keeping track of what I want my blog to become. It is easy to take offers from companies because they are really fun to do so, but sometimes it can also take away from my family posts….
What do you love about blogging?
The support I have gotten from complete strangers. The friendships I have made, and the opportunities I have had that I would not have otherwise had.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
Leaving impersonal comments – Following you, Follow me back. It only takes a moment to leave something more personal.
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?
Ask for help from blogs you admire. While some may be busy, others may have a something to share that will really change the way you do things.
Kim at Chubby Cheeks Thinks was a wonderful support to me when I first started out!
