Goodnight for Justice DVD Review
In Goodnight for Justice, John Goodnight (Luke Perry) is a Chicago city lawyer until his influential adoptive mother gets him relocated to the Wyoming territories as a Circuit Judge. Here in the wild where the land’s richest man has the local law enforcement on his payroll, Goodnight must become the judge, jury and executioner for those who fail to live good and honest lives and treat others as their equals.
Goodnight’s haunted past meets his present when he discovers that local beauty Kate Ramsey (Lara Gilchrist) is the key to finding the man who killed his birth parents during a covered wagon ambush, complicating his feelings for her.
Luke Perry and Jason Priestley of Beverly Hills 90210 fame reunited to work together on this Hallmark TV movie, based on characters created by Perry. Finally getting to live out one of his childhood dreams of acting in a Western, Perry is pretty convincing as Circuit Judge John Goodnight. Though no fault of Perry’s, his transformation from a drunken philanderer to a down-to-business circuit judge happened just a little too quickly. I found it surprising that Goodnight adapted so well to the role of circuit judge, considering he had no prior experience.
The plot is simple and predictable, no twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing as to what will happen next–until the credits started rolling. The ending was the most disappointing part of this movie for me as well as the most surprising. The love affair between Kate Ramsey and John Goodnight is complicated right from the start, and still remains unresolved at the end. It seems that this story may have been left open ended in anticipation for a sequel, but to my knowledge there is nothing currently slated.
The quality of the DVD is a bit lacking; the sound editing was very uneven and I had to keep adjusting the volume just to understand what some of the actors were saying. The Extras were also bit disappointing; the Featurette contained some of the same content as the director and actor interviews.
This is a fairly satisfying flick, and I would watch additional movies reprising Perry and Gilchrist in their roles of John Goodnight and Kate Ramsey. This movie is suitable for families to watch together; there is enough action to keep adults entertained, but nothing too gritty with bloodshed and death or sexual content to make the kids have to leave the room for a couple of minutes.
You can purchase Goodnight for Justice on Amazon for $14.99.
