My Review:

I enjoyed every second of this charming and funny movie! I howled with laughter the first time I watched Shrek and did the same watching Gnomeo & Juliet. Since this movie was had the same director as Shrek 2 that makes sense. I can see this turning into timeless classic just like Shrek is.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down to watch Gnomeo & Juliet. I knew it would be based on Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. I read it in Grade 10 English so I am familiar with the story (and have many of the lines memorized thanks to Mrs. Roach my English teacher). Thankfully the dialogue is much easier to follow in Gnomeo & Juliet. I did notice parts where they snuck in many of the quotes but with a twist on the words that was absolutely hilarious!

The Capulets and the Montagues shared a duplex with the Capulets with red decor and the Montagues with blue decor. Both their yards were FULL of garden gnomes in each respective colour. Of course, Ms. Capulet and Mr. Montague absolutely DESPISE eachother and all their interactions are seen yelling and fighting at each other. When they leave for the day, both yards come to life. Of course, since the human neighbours hate eachother so do the “Blues” and the “Reds” gnomes and their friends. Why? No one really knows….sound familiar?

I smiled when Gnomeo and Juliet met for the first time and it was love at first sight. It was really sweet. Neither of them realized that they were from the hated colour next door because they were decked out in black ninja suits. When they do realize later on who they both are and realized their love is doomed, it made me feel sad (same as I did with the play).

I think one of the funniest parts of the film for me was when the gnomes were spying on their own surfing the net looking to buy a new lawn mower. She came across this monstrosity called the “Terrafirminator” and it literally was the best of the best of the lawn mowers (there’s always very competitive lawn mower races between the gnomes so they really really wanted the owner to buy this). When she settled on the Kitten Mower, I laughed so hard…it meowed when she clicked to buy and you could see the look of disappointment on the face of the gnomes.

There was some tense moments towards the end when I didn’t know what was going to happen to my favourite characters, Gnomeo and Juliet. I don’t want to give it away because you need to watch and experience these scenes for yourself.

This is one movie that will leave you laughing one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. The music was fantastic and I would love to also get myself a copy of the soundtrack (big Elton John fan here). Pick it up when it’s out in stores on the 24th and enjoy it with your family too.
