Book Review | A Walk for Sunshine
Author: Jeff Alt
There are times that I read a book that is so important that I want to share its message with everyone. A Walk For Sunshine by Jeff Alt is an inspirational work of non-fiction that literally makes you feel like you are walking along the Appalachian Trail with the author.
Since my family and I enjoy hiking and the splendors of the Appalachian Trail, I assumed this was merely going to be a book of the author’s travels along the 2,160 mile journey. This book is indeed an adventure filled with the expected bugs, bears and even skunks sharing a bed but its overall purpose is ever so much more important. The author’s obvious love for his brother, who has cerebral palsy and receives excellent care in a dedicated care center, inspired his goal to walk the entire Appalachian Trail as a fundraiser for the Sunshine care facility. His trail blazing fundraising adventures have raised over $200,000 for this very worthy cause and shows how someone with dedication and passion can do just about anything.
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style which is warm, inviting and at times make you feel as if you are walking along side him in the glorious mountains. I laughed out loud at some of his stories, emphasized with his frustrations and appreciate his dedication to meeting his goals even if it seemed impossible.
This is one of the most interesting and inspiring traveling and hiking memoirs that I have ever read.
My husband and I also really enjoyed watching the author’s firsthand account of walking the Appalachian Trail in this entertaining movie, A Walk For Sunshine-Appalachian Trail Show. We have been taking my children on hikes since before they were born. In fact, we climbed to Clingman’s Dome in the Smoky Mountains with our infant in my husband’s pack and I was six months pregnant with our daughter. I love spending time outdoors with our family and inspiring a love of nature in my children. When we go on vacation in the mountains of Virginia, this summer I will be thinking about Jeff and his brother Aaron as we explore the glorious mountain trails as a family. The book even has an excellent supplemental section in the back that offers helpful tips for hiking with kids. I found it to be quite informative and got a few ideas for our upcoming trip.
You can learn more about A Walk For Sunshine which is available as both a book and DVD movie by visiting the author’s website.
