Book Review | A New Name for Worthless

Title: A New Name for Worthless: A Hero is Born

Author: Rocky Shepheard

My Review:

A New Name for Worthless: A Hero Is Born is written and illustrated by Rocky Shepheard and is a poignant and heartwarming tale for children about a dog that is being abused by his owner. I appreciate that it helps to educate them about treating animals humanely in a way that is realistic but not overly frightening for small children.

The story focuses on “Worthless” whose owner keeps him chained up because he has declared that he is “not a good watchdog”. When his best friends, Sly Fox and Otto hatch a plot to set him free, the three animals set off on the adventure of a lifetime. Will Worthless show his bravery and ever find a human companion that treats him the way man’s best friend deserves to be loved? Or maybe even a new name for Worthless and a warm home for him and his friends…………..?

The story is written in large print which I really like because my early reader thought it was great that he recognized many words in the text as I read aloud. The illustrations are beautifully done and really capture the animals and their emotions perfectly to bring them to life. I really think this is a wonderful and inspiring book that should be shared and discussed with every child.

Please take a moment to visit the Dogs Deserve Better website where you can learn more about the real life dog behind A New Name For Worthless and Dogs Deserve Better which is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to “freeing Man’s Best Friend and bringing him/her into the home and family.”

You can purchase A New Name For Worthless too for only $16.97 hardcover edition (free shipping) and there are discount for multiples or combo book sets too.
