Book Review | Earn It, Learn It
Author: Alisa T. Weinstein
Earn It, Learn It-Teach Your Child the Value of Money, Work and Time Well Spent by Alisa T. Weinstein offers a unique way to teach children 4-12 how to earn money through “real” jobs.
All three of my children have different age appropriate responsibilities as members of our family and only recently have we considered how to give an allowance to our eldest son, who is about to turn six. What I like most about Earn It, Learn It is that it is a learning experience that is going to teach values necessary for our children to become productive adults.
My family taught me the value of hard work, including my first real job as a birthday “present” when I turned fifteen. At the time it didn’t seem like such a great gift but looking back I am appreciative of the lessons I learned at an early age.
Earn It, Learn It is a system which helps children understand the true value of money and experience many different career options. This is an alternative to the traditional allowance and gives it a modern, fun twist. There are over 50 careers to choose from and over 950 suggested activities. Kids are financially compensated for completed assigned tasks pertaining to the career. For example, learn about Geologists by identifying your state’s miner or rock or calculate your family’s carbon footprint.
I think this is a wonderful concept that is much needed for today’s youth and I have been utilizing many of the activities as part of our home school curriculum. My kids have enjoyed the age appropriate activities that we have selected though I did not financially compensate them (I am waiting until they are older).
