When my two year old son fell into a campfire while on vacation last July 4th, I knew that our family would never been the same again. Thankfully, after several surgeries and excellent medical care at the University of Pittsburg Critical Care Burn Unit he recovered and did not lose his life. We continue to battle the severe hypertrophic scarring on his arm, hand and wrist. He wears a pressure garment every day and his rehabilitative therapist recommended twice daily massage and silicon treatment along with his pressure garment. If those therapies do not work then he will have to have another surgical revision of the scarring later this year.
We had the opportunity to try two scar solutions from ScarAway® including Scar Dimishing Serum and Silicon Scar Sheets. The new Scar Diminishing Serum has gentle massaging rollers and is designed to shrink, flatten and fade new and old scars. According to Jacob’s therapist the massaging action combined with the silicone soften and smooth the scar which gives it a diminished appearance. I had previously done the massage by hand which Jacob accepted but didn’t always like depending on the pressure that I was using (it was uncomfortable). From the first time I used ScarAway® Scar Diminishing Serum he LOVED it and said that it felt like it was “tickling” his scar and “felt good.” This product is very easy to use as I simply click it 1 or 2 times and then apply rollers gently massaging the scar area for 1-2 minute for 2-3 times per day. I did the routine for three times per day for 3-4 minutes because Jacob would actually ask for “more” and then tell me “that’s enough” after about 4 minutes. I brought the ScarAway® Scar Diminishing Serum to show his therapist and she thought it was a brilliant idea!
I also used the Silicon Scar Sheets underneath his pressure garment at night. This technology is used by burn centers, plastic surgeons and hospitals which I can verify because it has been recommended by Jacob’s burn surgeons, therapists and pediatrician. It is “clinically proven to restore skin to a more natural texture and color by diminishing old and new scars.” It is safe for ages 3 and up. Jacob tells me that the scar sheets help stop his intense itching and it seems to be comfortable for him to wear. The Silon® technology helps mimic the natural barrier function of healthy skin and according to company research can “hydrate the scar.”
In our experience, after several weeks of using this product, Jacob’s scar is definitely softer, less itchy and more comfortable for him. Though he continues to have a growing hypertrophic scar, his case is an extreme example and any positive progress is exceptional for us. Therefore, I am very pleased with the results we are experiencing from both ScarAway® products in the line. If you or someone you love has an old or new scar, I can speak from experience and recommend that you give this product a try! I will continue to use both of these products on my son’s burn and hope for continued progress in the months to come………….
