K and J Sunprotective Clothing Review
As a Canadian living in South Carolina, I’ve had to become more well educated about sun protection, since the climate here is hotter for a longer period of time, heck, it’s already t-shirt weather some afternoons down here and it’s still February. In Toronto, my kids would still be bundled up in layers upon layers of clothes, but by March, I’ll be regularly slathering my 12 year old and 4 year old in sunscreen. Unfortunately, Erik won’t be able to even start wearing sunscreen until May, when the weather starts really heating up here, so I was happy to receive a sample t-shirt from K and J Sunprotective Clothing for Erik to wear until then.
I also set out to get educated about what factors really allow clothing to protect against both the UVA and UVB rays of the sun. This article, from REI.com, provided me with some great baseline information about what to expect from the K and J Sunprotective Clothing. I was surprised to see that they chose to go with 100% cotton for their fabric, because the article had said that poly fibers were better at blocking the UVB rays, and treated fabrics were also more restrictive to the sun, but I read on K and J Sunprotective Clothing’s website that it was independently tested, so I investigated further.
The Dream shirt that I chose for Erik in natural, is a heavily woven cotton fabric, which feels soft to the touch and feels just like a regular t-shirt. It washes well and looks very stylish. I wish that the K and J Sunprotective Clothing came with a long sleeve option, because I worry about the fact that he won’t be able to wear any sunscreen yet and when I take him to the park with his brothers, I tend to wear him in my carrier and his little arms are exposed. The weave of the fabric is important for sun protection, so I was pleased to see that it was very tightly woven. It’s still pretty early in the season, so we haven’t had to worry quite as much about exposure, since the sun is still pretty mild, but I can say that the t-shirt is very stylish.
The nice thing about K and J Sunprotective Clothing is that it is still stylish and hip and I have no problem dressing Erik in his ‘dream’ t-shirt. I like that I can protect him from the sun without having to sacrifice style. If you’re looking for some cute, stylish clothing with added sun protection, than check out K and J Sunprotective Clothing.
