Title: The Tale of Ole Green Eyes
Author: Cathy Kennedy
The Tale of Ole Green Eyes by Cathy Kennedy is a wonderful children’s story for early readers. I had the opportunity to review this book written by a veteran homeschooling mom and my children and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, my five year old son and four year old daughter declared, “We love it because it is so exciting!”
The story is set during the Indian summer in the Appalachian Mountains. Every summer our family travels to Tennessee and West Virginia/Virginia for vacation and my children (ages 3, 4 and 5) immediately recognized this familiar setting as I began to read aloud. The author captures and describes the surrounding scenery beautifully and I felt as if I were standing in the hillside of East Tennessee. Two young sisters, Brittany and Nicole are spending a weekend with their beloved grandparents and settle near their Great-Grandmother as she vividly recounts the story of “Ole Green Eyes” a panther that she and her own sister had encountered when they were young girls themselves and narrowly escaped. Later, as Brittany and Nicole enjoy the beautiful surroundings they are terrified when they find a large paw print in the woods while exploring………Could it be “Ole Green Eyes”? As the sun begins to set and the woods begin to darken the two girls begin to become a bit scared as their imaginations run wild with thoughts of the dangerous panther. Will they make it back safely or are they being followed by “Ole Green Eyes”?
My children’s eyes were wide and they were glued to me as I read each page. There were plenty of opportunities throughout the story to use inflection and change my tone of voice to really fit the author’s words and this makes for one exciting story. The ending of the story is fun and really had my children responding to it with their own interpretations and ideas which ultimately make this story an excellent read in my opinion. The illustrations by Leann Vineyard Cooper are lovely and also help to bring the story and characters to life.
The Tale of Ole Green Eyes is a delightful story for early readers and younger children as a read aloud. It is full of adventure and the ending pulls it all together in a delightful manner.
