Kid’s Garden by Barefoot Books Review
My children have been helping me in our organic vegetable garden since they were babies. Gardening may not be the first thing that you think about when considering healthy ideas and fun for your kids but in my opinion gardening is a fantastic activity. For example, plenty of sunshine and time outside in the fresh air translates to extra Vitamin D, planting, weeding, digging is all fun exercise and enjoying the fruits, vegetable and herbs is just an extra “bonus”. The bounty from our garden gives my kids a sense of pride and they are much more willing to eat extra servings when it is something that they have grown themselves.
Barefoot Books has a wonderful “Kid’s Garden” Card Deck Set that includes 40 activities and games for both indoors and outdoors. It also includes an informative eight page booklet that has lots of fun information on “gardening tools, year round plant care and garden safety.”
As always, the quality of Barefoot Books is excellent and these sturdy cards are large, beautiful colorful illustrations and double-sided. My favorite part of “Kid’s Garden” is that the 40 activities are not only fun but educational too. We have incorporated this into our home school curriculum and my kids LOVE it! A favorite in our house is the “Digging for Decomposers” which explains that there is an “entire community of living things, hidden from our view in the soil beneath us.” With just a few simple tools my children spent two hours digging for red wigglers from the dirt that they added to the bottom of our compost heap. I even personally loved the “Homemade Insect Spray” activity because the organic insect shields that I buy from the store are so expensive that I am thrilled to make my own with simple household ingredients.
“Kid’s Garden” is a wonderful way to introduce children to nature, spend more time outside and appreciate the beauty of the earth around them. Bonus…..it is a ton of fun!
You can purchase “Kid’s Garden” Card Deck Set by Barefoot Books for only $19.99.
