Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon Book Review
Even though we are not a vegetarian family, we try to incorporate as many meatless meals into our diet as possible. I was excited to read Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon because it seemed like such a fun and interesting book by Barefoot Books.
Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon by Jules Bass and Debbie Harter is an adventure story about a delightful vegetarian dragon who is fully prepared to stand up for what he believes in at any consequence. It takes place in a far away forest and includes “Meathook and his band of carnivorous dragons who love feasting on royal princesses and brave knights.” Herb is a peaceful vegetarian dragon who enjoys tending to his garden and playing with his young friend, Nicole. When the kingdom bands together to get rid of all the dragons it takes Herb, the vegetarian dragon to bring about a solution that will allow the towns people and dragons to reside together peacefully. This book was somewhat more intense then I originally anticipated as it does contain references to dragons eating people and also a plan to throw all the dragons into a pit of alligators to be eaten up. Since I am still reading stories aloud to my children, I simply changed up a few of the words to “tone it down” just a bit and it was a really delightful story with a good message about staying true to self. My children, especially my five year old son just LOVED this book and couldn’t stop talking about it. When his friend came over to visit, I heard him telling the boy all about the story and before I knew it they were playing Knights and Dragons as they sat down at the play kitchen for a “vegetarian” snack. It was adorable………..
Characteristic of all of the Barefoot Books we have read together as a family, the illustrations are exceptional and really bring the story to life. It is whimsical, colorful, engaging and captured my children’s imaginations.
Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon is an excellent gift idea for a young vegetarian or anyone who enjoys a fantastic adventure involving knights, dragons and princesses.
To purchase Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon for $12.99 on sale for the hardcover or $7.99 for the paperback you are invited to visit Barefoot Books.
