Alphabet Kids™ Review
Homeschooling three young children is a major commitment and I rely on using the best resources to help teach them. Alphabet Kids™ is a literacy based series of six children’s books that “promote multi-cultural awareness and understanding.” To say that I was impressed with this series is an understatement.
Not only is each story in the Alphabet Kids™ series entertaining and educational but the way in which the authors incorporate the diverse backgrounds of the characters are exceptional. Follow the adventures of Allegra, Elena, Isaac, Oni, Umar and Yang as they spend the afternoon at the Alphabet Afterschool Center. Each story is an enjoyable read and the illustrations by Carol Nicklaus and Susan Unger are lively, colorful and engaging.
Alphabet Kids™ seek to “help children love who they are and realize that people who are different can be very good friends.” In my opinion, the authors of Alphabet Kids™ have succeeded in their mission with a fantastic series of books. My children eagerly await each new “adventure” and can relate to the characters in the stories. It is interesting to see which books they enjoy most as individuals as my eldest son (age 5) loves “Yang’s New Dance”, my daughter (age 4) likes “Oni’s Good Hair Day” and my 3 year old son likes “Isaac’s Zoo”.
Each Alphabet Kids™ book opened up a discussion about diversity and specific learning opportunities too. For example, I have been teaching my eldest the vowel system and because of the character’s names it made it that much easier to teach. Now, all three of my children have memorized the vowels and recently my three year old said, “Daddy…did you know that every word has to have a vowel? A, E, I, O,U and don’t forget Y” My husband was shocked and asked him how he knew this and he said that “Isaac” taught him in Alphabet Kids™.
