Blog Spotlight | A Year With Mom and Dad
Today I would like to welcome Julie from A Year With Mom and Dad. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
I am a Christian mom of a baby boy (age 6 months). I formerly taught in the public school system as a middle school Language Arts teacher, but am on extended maternity leave to start a family! I love to read (especially classic literature!), write and enjoy the outdoors (hiking, the beach), running, and all things home-making (cooking/baking, gardening, quilting, card-making, etc).
Please tell me about your blog.
And Baby Makes Three is a parenting blog to chronicle our journey into this new world of being parents! We write about daily events, reflections as time passes, and products we use and love.
How long have you been blogging?
Technically, I have been blogging since 2005, when I started a writing blog called A Writer Within (juliekieras.blogspot.com). But I have been seriously blogging since March of 2010 when we started our parent blog.
How did you get started?
We got started by writing down reflections and thoughts we had about being new parents, journaling about mini-milestones and posting photos for our friends and family.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
I feature mostly baby gear/products, cloth diapering products and also anything that would help moms and parents.
What was your favourite giveaway?
So far, my first official giveaway – the Wee Gallery Art Cards – is my favorite, because I so enjoy these cards! My desire to share this great product with other parents inspired me to approach the company to see if they would host a review/giveaway.
Who does your blog appeal to?
I think my blog appeals to other new moms, who are looking for tips and advice to get through all the baby gear available, and also those who can relate to new mom issues like struggling with breast-feeding, making the best decisions for your baby, and just learning to add another wonderful person to your life!
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
I’d like to direct our blog more into the educational/academia field to help moms who homeschool. As a teacher, I have observed a lot of what works and doesn’t work in education (in and out of my classroom!) and I’d like to share those thoughts with parents, and my observations as we prepare to homeschool in the upcoming years.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
My biggest challenge has been gaining readers who stick around. I have a handful of regular readers who comment weekly, but I’d like to build a bigger community of followers who read for more than just the giveaways.
What do you love about blogging?
I love it when you meet other moms who read a post and then share with me that they have had similar experiences – this just totally validates the feelings and experiences I have as a mom and makes me feel less “isolated” as I stay at home to raise my family. And vice versa, it’s been so refreshing to read about the experiences other moms have and learn from moms who have more than one child. I love the great, wide, endless resource blogs are for moms!
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
YES! I hate that every time I think of a good name for my blog, I Google it and it’s already taken! (We are going to have to consider a rename in the future because we plan to have more than 1 baby!) – I guess just that it seems difficult to do something “new” online these days… but not impossible, and that’s the fun of blogging!
Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
