Book Review | Without a Word
Author: Jill Kelly
Being reading Without a Word – How a Boy’s Unspoken Love Changed Everything by Jill Kelly, I knew very little about Jill and Jim Kelly. I knew that Jim Kelly was a famous football player and that they had a son with a disability, but that was all that I knew about them. Despite my lack of knowledge of the Kelly family, I was interested in reading this book because I wanted to learn more about the family’s experience.
Jill Kelly writes, in a very open and honest manner, about her relationship with her famous husband and how the birth of their son, Hunter, changed their lives. The book chronicles Hunter’s life, the relationship with his siblings and others in his life. Jill also writes about how she developed a relationship with God and how she and Jim found their way back to a loving marriage.
I found this book to be riveting as Jill’s honest and frank sharing of her family’s experience. She writes about moments of triumph and those of utter despair. I also liked how Jim’s thoughts at various points are included in the book.
While the focus of the book is meant to be Hunter (and, in many ways, it is), I also think that it is about the relationship between Jill and Jim as well as how the family learned to cope after Hunter’s death.
This book made me smile at various points in the book and made me cry in others. I would highly recommend Without a Word – How a Boy’s Unspoken Love Changed Everything by Jill Kelly because it is a touching testament to Hunter Kelly’s life as well as a story about how the Kelly parents healed their marriage.
