Book Review | Sacred Parenting
Author: Gary Thomas
The first book that I read by author Gary Thomas, “Sacred Marriage” was excellent so I was excited to read “Sacred Parenting”. I really appreciated that this was not just another “how to” book about parenting but instead shows us how God “uses our kids to change us.” According to the author, “Parenting is a school for spiritual formation- and our children are our teachers.” This one simple sentence tugged at me and I proceeded to devour the spiritual message of Sacred Parenting.
I was inspired by the real life stories of other parents who faced challenges raising their own children. I appreciated one story of a young mother who was so frustrated with her crying child that she shouted out in anger at her infant and then felt horrified at her actions. I could relate deeply to the message conveyed in this story. Having three children ages 3, 4 and 5 has been very challenging at times and to be honest, I have had to help both my husband and myself learn how to lesson our angry reactions and negative responses to our children’s behaviors. To be able to have the guidance to learn to manage those responses is spiritually freeing and makes me feel more effective as a mother. My husband does not read much but he was willing to let me read aloud several chapters over the course of two weeks and it opened up a discussion that brought us closer together as parents.
Sacred Parenting is a book that helped my family and will remain on our bookshelf for years to come.
