Book Review | The Waiting
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
I read The Choice back in February which is the first book of the Lancaster County Secrets series. I thought it was really good, but I LOVED The Waiting so much more! If you aren’t a lover of Amish Fiction, you will become one after reading The Waiting. It was absolutely wonderful!
The book made me feel like I was sitting right there with the Zook family as was able to picture the farm, Beacon Hill, the schoolhouse and all the interesting characters quite vividly in my minds eye. This was an easy book to read and one that I got through quickly because I had to keep reading. It’s not a suspense so don’t expect to be on the edge of your seat although there was one big twist in there that I won’t ruin for you! It is however, a novel with rich characters that will immerse you into the life of a seemingly simplistic Amish family. Turns out their lives can be complex too!
My favourite characters were Cal and his younger brother, Ephraim. Cal is such an honest man with a good heart that its hard to not like him. I got so angry when he was being beat up in the woods and he would not fight back because that isn’t the Amish way!! I almost shouted at the pages for him to defend himself against those bullies. Ephraim is young teen boy who is such a gentle soul who loves his family and his beloved animals. The way he looked after the cougar in the woods and went out everyday to bring it food touched my heart.
I thought it was cute how the aunties were trying to marry Cal off after his wife passed away. Their arranged Saturday Night Suppers where each week a different Plain women would “audition” to be Cal’s new bride by making supper for the Zook family. Cal was definitely not looking for a bride especially this way, but he was too kind to say anything to the aunties. Or maybe that’s just the Plain way- to not speak up and go with what your elders say. In any case, those Zooks ate some pretty scrumptious sounding suppers! Too bad Lizzie, who cooked their meals on the other days, couldn’t come live here with me!
I was rooting for Cal and Jorie to get together the whole book. I liked how the author weaved that part of the story along…things do get a little complicated for them, but I won’t say more- you will have to read the book!
Even if you didn’t read the first book in the series, that’s ok. There is no continuation of story from The Choice to The Waiting. The Waiting can be read as a standalone novel.
It was beautifully written and I cannot wait for the next book in the Lancaster County Secrets series. Don’t miss out on an incredible novel!
I received a copy of this book to review but was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own.
