Blog Spotlight | This Mom Loves

Today I would like to welcome Kate from This Mom Loves. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I am the wife of a wonderful husband, and mom of two beautiful girls, ages 4 and 2. I’m also a full-time elementary school teacher and a freelance writer. I live on a wonderful country property in Central Ontario.

Please tell me about your blog.

This Mom Loves was originally intended as a place for me to share my writing, my parenting stories, and information on topics such as education and entertainment. Once PR people started emailing, I opened myself up to reviews and giveaways as well. I also have a Momterview feature where I interview moms who are in the public eye, like Canada AM’s Marci Ien and Laurie Gelman from The Mom Show.

How long have you been blogging?

This Mom Loves launched late in January 2010.

How did you get started?

Honestly, it was right after watching Julie and Julia, and I thought “That’s it! A blog is the right outlet for me!”

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

I feature children’s or family-friendly products, mainly from Canadian businesses, both big and small. I have turned down many products because I know they wouldn’t fit with my family’s lifestyle, or interest my core audience.

What was your favourite giveaway?

I was thrilled with my first giveaway, an emergency kit courtesy of Public Safety Canada, because it opened me up to that whole side of blogging. I also love the Scholastic reviews I do, because I get the opportunity to share new books with my daughters, students and readers.

Who does your blog appeal to?

My blog appeals to moms who want to learn about new products (and have chances to win them!) but enjoy other topics and types of posts mixed in.

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I’d like to see readership continue to grow, not only because it gives me more of an audience for my writing (which motivates me to write more and better), but also because I realize that translates into more PR opportunities. I’d really love to see it lead into a print column somewhere, sometime.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Finding time to do it all! What do you love about blogging? I love that it’s a chance to write for an audience, and to get to know so many other moms all over the world.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Well, to be honest, I don’t like being pressured to follow blogs or Twitter accounts that I don’t enjoy or that aren’t revelant to my phase in life, or aligned with my beliefs. On the flip side of that, I certainly wouldn’t want anyone to follow my blog if they don’t really like it, solely in order to bump up their numbers. I don’t think that’s the prevailing sentiment, but it’s mine. I also can’t stand when people enter contests and say they are subscribers, followers, etc. and really they aren’t. I do verify each winner’s comment to be sure!

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?

For readers entering giveaways, I would just advise to read the directions! Most giveaways have a mandatory entry requirement, which is often visiting the company’s site and returning to comment. If you want extra entries for every giveaway, take a few minutes to sign up to follow me publicly through Google Friend Connect, subscribe through email, or follow @thismomloves on Twitter, and be sure to leave separate comments.

As for newbie review bloggers, I would advise you to start contacting small businesses to see if they’re interested in reviews or giveaways (sometimes you can find them through other blogs). Also read other giveaway blogs to see how they format their contests, and try to grow your readership by leaving thoughtful comments on other blogs, and following/subscribing to blogs you truly enjoy.

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

A few of my favourites are Crumbs in the Minivan, A Busy Mommy, Take a Mom’s Word For It, The Daily Mom Diaries, and I’m an Organizing Junkie!
