Blog Spotlight | Fun Being Frugal

Today I would like to welcome Kristen from Fun Being Frugal. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

First and foremost I am a wife and mom! I sometimes think I was born in the wrong era, as career aspirations are certainly not what I am all about. For the first time in his entire life, I am now home with my son due to job loss. Well, better late than never for this stay at home mom!

Please tell me about your blog.

My blog is a blog about my family’s view on “frugality”. The term and lifestyle mean different things to everyone, and I like to write about the ideas that work  for us. I also love to write about some of my shopping trips and highlight some deals. At one point, I saw myself turning into a deal blogger, but that’s really not my vision for the blog, so I have started getting back to my roots and leaving the deals to those who are much better at it than I am.Couponing is a passion (and necessity) for me, so I do write about my style of couponing often. Sometimes, not often, I will write about my family.I guess Frugality In The Making is about my family’s personal and ever changing frugal adventures.I recently started doing reviews and giveaways. I love working with the PR teams! It is so awesome that they regognize bloggers as a major influence in the economy. Word of mouth can be a company’s strongest sales builder, as I have seen in my “day job”. I recently had a company offer me monthly review opportunities, and I just thought “How cool is that? I am making a difference for this company!”

How long have you been blogging?

I started my Blog in March 2008

How did you get started?

I started it as a means of accountabilty and encouragement for myself. We had just gone through a rough spell, financially, with me having 3 surgeries in a year and being out of work about 4 to 5 months. We had only been living in our home for about a year and knew we needed to find better ways to make our money stretch. My husband and I wanted a cushion in case an emergency like that cropped up again! Writing about it made me more aware, I guess you could say. I think I had 2 followers for about 6 months! But I was, and still am, hooked!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

I haven’t done a ton of reviews, but those I have done seem to have a common theme of affordable items and ideas that make the day to day life easier. I have also done coupon giveaways. I am totally open to just about any family friendly product. I would love to get into more reviews geared towards my teen son. There really do not seem to be all that many for that market.

What was your favourite giveaway?

Hands down, the Soda Stream! We all love that machine and use it often! I entered so many giveaways and lost, that I just took it uponn myself to contact the PR department and beg (ahem, I mean ask) if they would be open to a review and giveaway.

Who does your blog appeal to?

My followers are pretty varied. But I would guess anyone who is looking to save some money, and read about it in a personal not scripted fashion would enjoy my blog. I don’t have a definitive theme, so you just never know what tomorrow’s post will be 😉

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

After about a year of blogging, I thought I wanted to make some money off of it. Now, while I wouldn’t turn any away, I am hoping to keep my blog personal. I want to write how I live – sometimes a little fresh, sometimes a little spontaneous, but always with honesty and integrity.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

My biggest challenge is time! I would love to be a blogger who can write multiple posts daily, but working outside the home 11 hrs a day, and balancing home and family…. well, just like so many of my readers, if I can fit in a shower some days I am happy!

What do you love about blogging?

Oh my! The people I have “met” online through blogging is by far the most amazing aspect. Whether it is through comments on the blog, my Facebook Page, PR reps, and even people in the stores who I have turned onto my blog, the people have all been awesome.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Honestly, I hate those strings of letters some bloggers have in order to leave a comment. Drives me batty! You can moderate, and I feel like I am going through hoops. (Sorry, if any of these readers have this, but well there’s that honesty!)

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway?

Actually, because I always use Random.org to pick the winner, there really are no tricks. However I would love feeback on which giveaways they would like in the future. I can always try!

newbie review bloggers?

Sometimes you just have to take it upon yourself to contact a company. Look at my results for the Soda Stream. Also, always be honest. You lose your own integrity, when you aren’t in an effort just to get more entries.

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

Hmmm, my favorite blogger is Gina from Gina’s Kokopelli because she is such an amazing and generous blogger. I also love to read Frugal & Fabulous. Lindsay is a great example of a Review Blogger. I am a crafter wannabee, so I love A Soft Place To Land and Small Home In The Country. Oh there are so many I read, and I hate to leave people out…. For Couponing, Krazy Koupon Lady is a great one….

How can people find you?

Right now they can find me at http://funbeingfrugal.com/ . I hope to be moving to Word Press by August and have already bought my domain, so we’ll see.
