Blog Spotlight | Alas 3 Lads
Today I would like to welcome Kari from Alas 3 Lads. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
My name is Kari and I live in Kentucky with my husband and our four kids. Our boys are ages 9, 12, and 17; our daughter is age 14. My husband is a firefighter and also does construction/carpentry/remodeling on the side. I’m lucky because he is a very talented jack-of-all-trades kind of guy. I used to work as a registered nurse, but, once we started having children I gave up my job in the hospital to become a full-time stay-at-home mom. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I wouldn’t trade this job for the world. We also have a big, spoiled rotten dog – an airedale terrier named Emma. I’m pretty much a homebody who loves reading, movies, music, shopping, and spending time with my friends & family.
Please tell me about your blog.
I like to write about family and parenting topics, especially those relating to raising teens/tweens. It’s great to be able to share something funny, sad, or even just to vent about something and get feedback and support from my readers. I enjoy posting reviews and giveaways for products that are relevant to me or my family. You can also find book, music, and movie reviews. I have a regular feature every Tuesday called “Movie Trailer Tuesday” where I share a movie trailer and a little quip about films that I recommend. Occasionally, when I find something that I feel is worth sharing, I will also use my blog to spread information about public service campaigns.
How long have you been blogging?
Next month I will celebrate my 3-year blogging anniversary.
How did you get started?
When I discovered the “blogging world” several years ago, I was amazed at all these fun and creative sites – sharing ideas; discussing parenting; tips and tutorials on almost any topic; beautiful photos; getting to know other people, similar and different from myself, from all over the world – I just knew I wanted to be a part of it.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
Family-friendly products, household items, health & beauty products, books, gift cards.
What was your favourite giveaway?
I’m not sure if I have a favorite, but gift cards always seem to be a big hit.
Who does your blog appeal to?
My blog probably appeals most to other women and parents.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
My blog is very personal to me and I’m happy with the current feel of things. As my children get older and enter new phases of their lives, I’m sure that will be a common theme on my blog.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
My biggest challenge is definitely the technical aspect of blogging. I’m pretty clueless when it comes to HTML codes, page rank and those kind of things. It’s been a lot of learning as I go and I still have a lot to learn.
What do you love about blogging?
Getting to know all kinds of people that I would otherwise never had the chance to “meet” without blogging.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
My only pet peeve is commenting platforms that are confusing to use.
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?
When it comes to entering my giveaways, my advice is just to read and follow all directions. I try to keep things fairly simple and straight-forward. As for advice for newbies?…just do what feels right for you and if you are hosting a giveaway, don’t make the entry instructions too complex. I don’t mind doing a little work to enter a giveaway, but, if I find that it’s way too time-consuming or confusing, I’ll pass on entering the giveaway.
Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
I have so many favorite blogs that I read regularly, it would be impossible to mention them all. But, here are a few of my faves and why I like them:
www.couture-nerd.com – great place to get my fashion, beauty, and celebrity gossip fix; also a lot of really fantastic giveaways
www.roomremixblog.blogspot.com – lots of pretty pictures; great resource for budget decorating, design advice and inspiration
www.findyournextbookhere.com – one of the best book blogs around! she shares a wealth of book reviews and is totally hilarious
www.bloggiveaways.blogspot.com – this is an almost daily listing of giveaways going on around the blogosphere; she will also list your blog giveaway for free
