Pure Alternative Review

I have been plagued by headaches for most of my adult life. Most times I can manage them on my own with just a Tylenol or Motrin, but then there are the ones that are so bad that nothing really helps. I end up spending the day in bed with a cold cloth on my head and being doped up on Gravol to get rid of the horrible nausea. Those bad ones usually occur once every few months. However, I am finding that I have a headache at least once a week or more. I worry that I am taking too many OTC pain killers and was looking at other ways to manage them.

Along with the headaches is the neck pain which is killer. My neck gets so sore that it hurts to move. Last year I couldn’t even turn my head fully to look to the side. It locks up from time to time and I see a chiropractor every two weeks for adjustments to keep things moving properly.

I was very happy when an online friend of mine, Crystal Dade, contacted me to do a review of her new products from her business, Pure Alternative. I had met Crystal through her work with the NVA where I am also a member and knew she studied to become a Master Herbalist in 2008. I couldn’t wait to try out her new line of organic wellness products to see if they would help my pain.

Crystal sent me three Pure Alternative products to try out: Headache Balm, Muscle Rub and Healing Salve.

Headache Balm was the first one I used as soon as I opened the package! It is recommended for throbbing, pounding or nervous tension headaches. It contains jojoba oil, menthol crystals and essential oils in a Shea butter base. My headaches are usually right on my eyebrow or a little above. I massaged the balm into my forehead on my eyebrows and temples. I could feel it instantly absorbing into my skin and it had a relaxing and cooling feeling. This product really does help! For the regular tension headaches, I can put it on and get relief within the hour and not have to take any painkillers. I love that because I don’t like taking medications and try to limit their use as much as possible. For my migraines, it helps with my pain management and takes a bit of the edge off. Once I get a migraine though, pretty much nothing takes it away and I just have to rest and wait it out. At least with the Headache Balm, the pain is more bearable than before. The Headache Balm can also be refrigerated to give you an extra cooling effect. At a price of only $6, this is a FANTASTIC product for headaches and it’s the first thing I use now when I feel one coming on.

The next product I tried was the Muscle Rub. It contains deep penetrating botanicals like St. Johns Wort with its anti-inflammatory properties to help release spinal pain and nerve tension.  I used this mainly on my neck and upper back where I hold most of my tension. The right side of my neck is always knotted up and is the root of most of my tension headaches. I love having John massage the Muscle Rub into my neck and upper back. It feels so good and so relaxing. I usually put the Muscle Rub on my neck and the Headache Balm on my forehead and this is a combination that really is working great for me. I like that it doesn’t smell bad like some muscle rubs on the market. It has a very mild scent actually. It absorbs in nicely and doesn’t leave me feeling all icky and greasy.  It can be purchased from Pure Alternative for $10.

Last, but not least, I tried the Healing Salve. This is a broad spectrum salve used for minor skin irritations like burns, chapped or cracked skin. It is made from fresh and dried herbs including calendula which is a powerful antimicrobial, antifungal and healing botanical.  I tried it on a burn on my arm I got trying to get dinner out of the oven. I couldn’t open the oven door all the way because John had his work tools in front of the oven door (we are STILL in the midst of kitchen renos) and my arm hit the side and I burnt myself. YOWCH! It really really hurt. Right away I ran my arm under cold water, but it was still really sore. I remembered I had some of Pure Alternative’s Healing Salve so I ran to put some on my burn. I gently rubbed it in and found that it really helped soothe my pain. I used it for the next two days and then the mark was gone. I would definitely use it again on any burns or cuts and is something good to have around the house when first aid is required.  It can be purchased for $6. Pure Alternative really does have AWESOME prices!
