Book Review | The Dreamz Friendz and the Magic Well
Author: Michael King
This bedtime story is about four friends who go on an adventure to discover the secrets in a magic well. I first read this book on my own, and then sat down and read it to my two youngest children. My two and a half year old son loved the book itself, but couldn’t focus on the actual story. My six year old daughter enjoyed the story and the book.
The illustrations in the book are colourful and fun, and my son spent a great deal of time looking over each page and describing the story as he interpreted it from the pictures. The pictures and story appeal to both boys and girls, and the font used is large and clean to make it easy for young readers.
I liked the book and the message the story provided, but I found the rhymes in the book distracting. The use of rhyme throughout the book made me feel like it was more of a poem than a story, but it often lost the rhythmic structure associated with poetry. The rhyming words are also a different colour than the rest of the text, making them stand out even more to the reader and drawing attention away from the story. However, as a parent I do appreciate the learning opportunity offered by the rhymes.
The overall story offered some really positive messages to children, which impressed this Mommy. My children have asked to hear the story again and again, so they were obviously pleased with the book as well.
