Blog Spotlight | The Clever Mommy Chronicles

Today I would like to welcome Krystal from The Clever Mommy Chronicles. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

The short version is that I’m a thirty-something stay at home mom living in Colorado with her husband and 19 month old son.

The slightly longer version is that I grew up in Southern California, and will always consider that home.  I am a vegetarian.  I’m addicted to chocolate.  I can’t stand the sound of ripping paper (it’s like nails on a chalk board to me, and yes, Christmas morning is torturous). I love cleaning, but hate doing laundry.  I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I have more freckles than you can count.   I once caught Adam Levine’s guitar pic in my cleavage at a Maroon 5 Concert.  I don’t mind if peanut butter gets in the jelly jar, but I can’t handle jelly getting in the peanut butter.  I make my son’s cloth diapers.  I adore shoes, and I have had one consistent dream throughout my life (besides being rich and famous, of course): to be a children’s book author, and someday I hope to follow through on that dream.

Please tell me about your blog.

The Clever Mommy Chronicles is a place for me to record my attempts at being a clever mommy (hence, the name).  I share my tips for living simpler, greener, better.  In the past I posted a lot of recipes, but since I am currently on the hCG diet, that has stopped for a bit.  I run two memes (both fairly new, and just getting going): Fight the Scale Fridays (for weight loss support) and Super Saturday Giveaways (a giveaway linky).  I also review products and host giveaways.

How long have you been blogging?

Off and on for about four years.

How did you get started?

I started with a blog about our infertility struggles.  I only posted two or three times.  Once we finally conceived our son, I started a family blog.  The purpose was simply to keep our far away friends and family updated on what was going on with us. Then, in March of this year, I found that there was a whole blogging community out there, and I wanted to be a part of it.  I had been looking for an outlet for a while, something that was mine alone, and blogging was perfect for me.  It’s grown so fast since then, and is still growing.  Being a part of this community has been amazing.  I love it!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

Pretty much anything family friendly, but I try to focus on green/eco friendly products.

What was your favourite giveaway?

hmmm… that’s tough.  I’ve loved so many of them.  I think maybe it’s a tie between my giveaway for The Peach Tree Brooklyn (Amy was so much fun to work with, and she makes the most beautiful jewelry!) and my giveaway for Happy Squash Toys (my son plays with his hand carved wooden dinosaurs every day; he loves them).

Who does your blog appeal to?

I hope it appeals to Moms of all kinds, because that’s who I’m writing to 🙂

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I actually blogged about this recently.  I’m trying to get a bit more personal with my blog, and bring more of me into my posts.  I’d also love for it to become a place for people to come when they have questions about living greener and simpler.  Right now I think a bit of my following is simply for the giveaways, which is great, but I’d love for more and more people to come for my content, too.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Finding my voice.  Determining exactly what I want the blog to be.  I think I’m getting there 🙂

What do you love about blogging?

As I mentioned before, it gives me something that is mine alone, and I think it’s important for moms to have something like that.  I also love being a part of the blogging community.  I’ve made some pretty amazing friends in the short four months since I joined the community, and I know I’ll make many more in the years to come.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

I have a few.  At the risk of sounding like a big complainer, I’ll mention one.  I have to really bite my tongue when someone leaves a comment on a post that is basically just a plea for me to come follow them, and it’s obvious they didn’t read the post, and probably didn’t look at anything else on my blog, either.  Even worse when they leave that comment on a giveaway post.  I’m probably not going to go follow those people.  A much better way to go about that would be to actually read a post on a blog, and leave a thoughtful comment.  I’m 1000% more likely to go check out your blog then, and will probably follow you, too.

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaways? newbie review bloggers?

Something I’ve learned, reviewing products, is to keep things as simple as possible, and short/sweet is always better than long and drawn out.  People want to know how the product works, what you thought of it, some photos of it in action, and then they want to enter the giveaway.  If your post is too long, or if there are too many hoops to jump through in order to enter, they may just not enter.

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

I have so many favorites! A few are as follows:

For inspiration: Nie Nie

For laughs: Tales from the Motherhood

For blogging tips: Mommy Perks VIP blog

For drooling over her decor: Dreamy White

There are so many more, it would be a very long list! 🙂
