Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Bars Are Now Fair Trade Certified
Have you ever heard of fair trade chocolate? I hadn’t until I found out that Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bars are now Fair Trade Certified! Before you could only find Fair Trade chocolate in specialty stores and they usually have a heftier price tag than the regular chocolate bars found at your local convenience store. Cadbury has made Fair Trade chocolate much more accessible to all Canadians!
You can count on the same great quality, taste and price that Dairy Milk is known for. They are one of my favourite bars. I love the milky, smooth chocolate taste. The Fair Trade Dairy Milk bars are just as yummy. The only difference now is these chocolate bars are improving the lives of the farmers in the countries of Ghana and Belize!
So what exactly is Fair Trade anyways? I had heard of this concept with regards to Fair Trade coffee, but never really understood what it meant until now. It’s actually quite simple: paying farmers a fair and guaranteed price for their crop with an additional social premium that is invested back into their local community. It’s one of the leading product certification and labeling systems in the world. The neat thing is that the farmers choose where the money for the social premium goes!
For instance, this Spring Cadbury made its first global premium payment of $750,000+ CDN to the cocoa farmers in the African country, Ghana. This money has been allocated to building wells, mobile health clinics, funding carbon reduction strategies, etc. Cadbury’s Fair Trade commitment will quadruple the sale of Fair Trade cocoa from Ghana which in turn will directly improve the lives of 60,000 cocoa farmers in the region. Plus, it will also benefit 6000 sugar farmers in Belize with Cadbury’s purchase of Fair Trade sugarcane.
