Blog Spotlight | The Village of Moms

Today I would like to welcome Valerie from The Village of Moms. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

You can read ALL about me and my personal life on my family blog’s “About” section if you have a minute or 20 (yes,it’s that long), but the caption under my Kite Koop blog says it best: I am a (very blessed) coach’s wife with two little ones 2 and under (and 2 that I’ve never met in Heaven). My days are full of playing, yelling, snuggling, silliness, cooking, cleaning, obsessing, organizing, complaining, and wondering if it’s nap time yet. I am by no means “green,” but becoming “greener” everyday, but for now I believe in attachment parenting, co-sleeping, baby-wearing, cloth diapering, breastfeeding past a year and such. Welcome to our blog! I’m so glad you found us, and we hope you stay a while.

Please tell me about your blog.

VILLAGE of MOMS… BECAUSE IT TAKES A VILLAGE (of moms) TO RAISE KIDS!

This is a resource blog meant to be a “one-stop shop” for moms on all subjects pertaining to parenting and the home to (hopefully) make life a little easier. Though I am the main author, guest mommy bloggers chime in from time to time to help other moms with various parenting hurdles. Let’s face it — we all need a little help. This “team effort” blog is created for moms by moms, because moms really do know best!

How long have you been blogging?

Well, my family blog has been up since late 2007, but VoM is brand new (officially launched April 1st).

How did you get started?

My husband “nudged” me last year, so I finally (and reluctantly) did. Now, I have days I’m glad I did mixed in with days that I’m not. Typical, right?

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

Family-friendly, organic, natural, and/or baby/child.

What was your favourite giveaway?

I have enjoyed receiving a plethora of products, all of them in fact. However, my favorite hasn’t gone “live” yet. Not until next month. Shhh!

I also am part of BlogMania with about 20 different sponsors contributing several prizes worth over $500 already (and growing). I really like some of those, and will even get to review some of them as part of a “preview” to BlogMania in September.

Who does your blog appeal to?

Moms, of course, though I have had one dad comment!

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I want to have giveaways each month, maybe even once a week, but I really do want the blog to still be a good resource for all moms. Once I get into the “groove” of things and am away from my two summer themes (healthy living, parenting), I plan on having my regular week as follows: 1 “green” post, 1 parenting post, 1 review/giveaway, 1 recipe post, 1 miscellaneous.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Migrating to WP from Blogger!!! Okay, that and the fact that I’ve been inundated with reviews all of a sudden.

What do you love about blogging?

Connecting with other moms!

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Too much clutter, no organization, things too difficult to find (in particular, ways to contact the blogger when I want to invite a blogger to guest post for me!)

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?

Well, no one thing will help them win any more than the other, but I do encourage entering as many times as possible. Especially now that I don’t have a HUGE readership (still just under 200). That makes my giveaways a little bit lower in number of entries than some of the blogs with 1000s of followers. Oh, and don’t leave a comment on a giveaway unless you are entering it. That just throws off the entire comment numbering! 🙂

Newbie review bloggers? Plenty, since being a newbie myself! Unless you have oodles of time on your hands, don’t make requests from too many companies all at once (or you may end up with tons to review all at once!). Take the time to make a connection with the company you are cold calling (or emailing). Research their philosophy and story and find a common ground. They like to hear your story, real, not made up, from your heart. Tell them about your blog and your intentions on where you’d like it to go. ALWAYS thank them, even if they decline. You never know when they’ll say yes. I’ve had several come back a few days/weeks alter and agree. Always leave them with a good experience. Review only the things you like, so as to avoid a bland review or a refusal to post (haven’t had one yet). I personally try to contact people that I know are partnering with bloggers already, so it’s not all new to them. Sometimes I get “new” companies. Make the offer appealing to them. What can you do for them? How will it help their company for you to review their product? Oh, I have about 2 more dozen to add but I’ll leave it at that! Newbies can contact me directly for more help. I’m always willing to help.

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

McKMama, Heavenly Homemakers (she’s a neighbor and a friend), High Heeled Mom (friend and former college bud), Orgjunkie, Totally Together Journal, oh I have SOOOO many more

How can people find you?

I can’t tell you that information! No, just kidding! Of course on both of my blogs and on Facebook. I don’t Twitter, yet. (new website is: http://thevillageofmoms.com/
