Blog Spotlight | the mini Beach bird

the mini BEACH bird

Today I would like to welcome Lillian-Juda from the mini Beach bird! I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

*Stands up and waves* Hi, my name is Lillian-Juda Leonard, and I am a 22 year old hippie. LOL Just kidding! No I’m a 22 year old trying to get back into the swing of things. I am currently self-employed and just opened my own blog design service, Mini Beach Bird Designs. I took a break from college, and am looking to go back to school for cooking when I (personally) can afford it.

I was born in Atlanta, Ga and have professional experience in Cooking, Nursing, Web/Graphic Design, Personal Organization, Veterinary, Retail, Computer IT, Child Care and Public Relations.Learn *way* more HERE

Please tell me about your blog.

Well a little tech stuff:I have been open for a little over 4 months and have over 200 GFC followers, over 200 twitter followers, along with over 2000 page views from the beginning on May, and have been featured in the Editor’s Picks section of Prizey several times.

Tagline: “The mini Beach bird features blogs and vlogs about local going-ons in the mom blogging community. Written by a non-mom, but mom-loving green friendly future chef, the mini Beach bird offers giveaways, recipes, stories, and much more! The mini Beach bird – Get a mom!”

So, I have to admit when my mom told me she was “giveaway blogging” I was like, Yeah, ok. Of course I didn’t realize how awesome it is until I started winning! LOL When I started the mini Beach bird, it was more of a project. I just figured, I’ll just throw something up there and write ramblings and list giveaways. After a while I broke down and had to design a layout. THIS IS WHERE IT ALL WENT ARY! Lol

This was a nice change to what I had, or rather had not, been doing. I have a long history in web design, and had been really neglecting my computer art. My blog really helped me channel that. I started to really get back into all of my graphic arts and HTML (website coding). It gave me something to focus my energy and intellect on while not in school. Not only that, but I started to pick up followers. Which, I have to say took me a little while to get used to the thought of someone half across the world reading and liking me enough to follow my blog.

Once I got used to that, everything became really enjoyable. I really loved the community I was finding. All my friends say I’m the mom of the group, so I felt as if I had been accepted. Which was a nice transitions from my party life in downtown Atlanta to the quite sub-burbs if Conyers. I really couldn’t have planned it better.

So, I guess I would have to say my blog is a social experiment that channeled my love of art into something I can enjoy for myself and others. It’s also been a wonderful networking and business tool for me. I’m really thankful to my mother for getting me started.

How long have you been blogging?

I have been technically been “blogging” sense 2000, when I had my first deadjournal. Man that was so long ago. Although, this was not the beginning of my “internetz” journeys. I had been on geocites sense around 98′ or 99′. I also was a neopets junkie! Remember those? Yeah, ya’ do. lol

How did you get started?

When I was younger, (like around 12) my mom was in school. So sometimes when she went to night classes, instead of leaving me at home, she would let me come with her and I would hang out in the library and tech labs. After a while, I spent so much time there, they made me a honorary “junior techy”. Which basically meant I got to walk around and fix peoples screw-ups. Students would often ask me how old I was, and I often would tell them something RIDICULOUS like 25…. apparently I must have looked it, because no one questioned me…? Maybe I was just humored ‘cuz I was cute with blonde hair and dimples.

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

A bunch… Lol
Let’s see, I just got started in June, but so far I have Jewelery, Food, Pharmacy/Nutrition, Medical, Gadgets, Home Items, and Kitchen Stuffs I suppose? 😀

What was your favourite giveaway?

Held: Probably any of my Etsy’s. I always LOVE hosting Etsy giveaways. I think it’s a lot of fun to work with the artist and help them out, especially in this economy.

Won: Everything! I can’t really think of just one. Although I will say, I think the one I most “enjoyed” was the Hot Milk nightie. Very great design, material, and style. I had no idea it was *actually* a nursing nightie. No like really, you couldn’t tell.

Always Wanted: A KEURIG SINGLE CUP POD COFFEE MAKER!!!!! UGH!!! That was the ENTIRE reason I started giveaway blogging! My mom told me they were giving a bunch away, so I guess that’s really how I got sucked in. Although I would really like to work with Soda Stream and Happy Tiffin.

Who does your blog appeal to?

Everyone! Or at least I try to make it as well rounded as possible. Although I will say, don’t visit my blog if you don’t like bright colors, it will burn your eyes.

*Disclaimer: I can have a dirty mouth, but I try my best to keep it under wraps, please forgive me, I’m just a city girl from the ghetto. What was that Usher said, “Peace up, A-town down…” or How about  *does best Atlanta accent & hand gesture* “East side, Wat wat!” LOL It just happens when you live here, I promise…..

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

Hopefully larger. I would like to be able to reach a large audience. Mostly because I do post about some really interesting topics and low key causes that I hope get out to blog land. Newest one is:Amazing New Findings On Helping Kids With Mental & Learning Disorders – We’re finally “thinking” about mental and learning disorders in kids.

Just click “enrichment” on the tags widget.

I also host a weekly linky meme on Monday called Meditation Monday. This is a cool gather of posts and authors, written to help you destress and live healthier in under 10 mins a day.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Time management and structured sleeping. Since my current employment is an at home business, I have a tendency to stay up all night, then nap throughout the entire day. As well as spend blocks of my time online.

What do you love about blogging?

The people and cool stuff and networking. LIKE OMG I freaked out when I found out the internet had FINALLY become interconnected. I was like, “I can link everything back to google and facebook… NO WAY.”

That, and I finally figured out twitter. Took me FOREVER, but I will say, now that I know, I’m totally addicted. A way to be able to have a conversation without over communication or involvement? FINALLY! Maybe ADHD people will rule the world someday.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

YES! I have to say it, but I really hate un-needed/cat-ty confrontations and unprofessionalism. I’ve noticed a large peak in fighting recently, and it’s kind of upsetting. It just bugs me to watch people stepping on, or getting their own toes stepped on. If someone is unpleasant, let it go. Your causing more stress than it’s worth. (I should know, 3 stomach/intestine ulcers in 2 years will make a person chill completely.) Not only that, but don’t take it to the next level. Take pride in the fact that you are the adult by letting these things go. Take control of the situation, don’t let it get control over you.

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway?

GIANT TIP O’ THE DAY: Use as many entries as possible! Most of my giveaways have around 40 possible entries. I do this because I’m one of those people who “pick n’ stick”. I will “pick” a blog that has good giveaways and sign up for EVERYTHING. By the end of it I have 21 entries out of 60, and I win.

Although, on the flip side, save yourself for the right one. If you don’t want to spend the time to enter a lot of giveaways, or like to jump around, pick 1 big one you want and enter as many entries as possible. You’ll get one, just remember the rule of chance: For every 100% you put in, you will usually receive back about 30%.

Do you have any advice for the newbie review bloggers?

Lets face it, numbers talk, so get your numbers up if you can. Start posting about other things than just giveaways. This will bring a broader audience and increase your general traffic.

Also, make sure your blog looks good. Over 65% of readers determine where or not they like a blog just by the design. You’ve heard of First Impressions, well blogging and PR are no different, so shine the first time and you won’t be overlooked.

Last, but probably most importantly to “outreach” PRs (people who go looking for products instead of waiting to be contacted). Make sure to have a strong, informative, but short pitch letter. It needs to be to the point but still show your personality and creativity. Little trick: Make sure to seem as relevant and important to the company as possible. Let them know your contacting them to help not only yourself but THEM as a company as well. Also, don’t forget to throw in a couple of those numbers your trying to get up 😀

Also make sure to be approachable. No one wants to give a grump free stuff. Part of being approachable is being sociable too. So also make sure to be as networked as you feel comfortable. FB, Twitter, Stumble and many others will allow you to be broadcasted in several different social circles.

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

Hmmm.. tuffy. First off, have to give a shout out to my mom, the Beachbird 2. She ALWAYS has some great stuff floating around. Otherwise, one of my favs is Goodie Goodie Gumdrops, but I’m partial lol. I really like Natural Mommie, Midday Escapades, and Life With Rats and More. <—-Love the last one. Plus my all time favs Theta Mom and Simply Stacie 😉

How can people find you?
