Book Review | The Art of Devotion
Title: The Art of Devotion
Author: Samantha Bruce-Benjamin
Nothing I could say about The Art of Devotion would truly do it justice. It is reminiscent of another time, when storytelling and writing were art forms, when a novel was more than an object of mass production. The writing is magnificent; the novel compelling and heartbreaking yet magical.
I fell in love with the way the story is told, through the eyes of multiple narrators. Each adds something to the story that is so delightful, so aesthetically pleasing to the mind, the heart, the soul.
There are so many emotions within this novel, you will want to take your time, reading slowly to fully understand and experience each and every one. You will feel the despair, the love, the devotion, the regret, and more as you make your way through these pages. Some parts are so raw, so intense, they are heart-wrenching. I found the author’s method of story-telling to be quite engaging; the novel moves from one narrator to the next quickly yet fluidly (each segment runs about two pages or so). As I reached the end of each segment, I was anxious to hear more, almost greedy for it. However, I read slowly, wanting to drink in every word and make it last as long as possible.
It was a privilege to read The Art of Devotion. This is, unbelievably, a debut novel from Samantha Bruce-Benjamin. What an amazing, magnificent, magical book. It is one you will treasure and read again and again.
