Title: I Will Not Be Silent
Author: April J. Maley
This is a story of a nine-year-old girl whose life was altered forever by her father and his choices, That girl is me. I lived through years of physical, mental, and emotional abuse: alcoholism; rejection; murder; illness; and insanity. I have battled my own inner demons as a result of that fateful day. It is my greatest wish to create a broader awareness and preventative action for child abuse and domestic violence, and provide hope for those who find themselves trapped in those situations. The cycle can be broken.
“The consequences of your denial will be with you for a lifetime and will be passed down to the next generations. Break your silence on abuse!”
-Patty Rase Hopson
“I had no idea that day would be the last time I would see her alive. Only through the void that I feel now and with my own adult, mother-mind, do I wish I could have had a chance to ask her why she stayed, and, God, oh God, why did she go back that day? Did she love me?”

This is a heartbreaking book because child and domestic abuse is never easy and this is a true story that happened to the author. The book is divided into before, during, and after the big crisis that happened in her young life at age 9. It is really really hard for me to read that people knew what was going on but did nothing to stop it or help the kids. A whole town stayed away and let things happen. Things were different back then, and I certainly hope nowadays someone would do something. The tragedy of this story could have been prevented if someone had reached out to help April, her mother, and her siblings. I think everyone should know April’s story; if anyone anywhere sees signs of abuse in a woman or child, they should seek to help the victims. It is a travesty when no one does anything. I know it was extremely hard for April to have wrote this and told her story but I am so glad she didn’t remain silent. I hope this awakens people’s need to help others. This is a quick and important read so pick it up when you have a chance.
