Blog Spotlight: Broken Teepee
I am running a feature spotlighting other Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected](it’s free!).
Today I would like to welcome Patty from Broken Teepee. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
I am a city girl turned goat farmer. My husband and I retired early because I experienced some serious health problems and we wanted to enjoy life as I was able. So we sold everything, moved into a fifth wheel trailer and started traveling around the country. We saw so many beautiful places. Then the recession hit and we had to re-evaluate our budget. We had fallen in love with Montana ( we are from NJ ) so we bought a piece of land and are building our house. By ourselves for the most part. He is doing most of the building.
Please tell me about your blog.
It started out as a vehicle to showcase my jewelry shop, Broken Teepee Designs but it started evolving into a chronicle of the house building and then I discovered the joy of reviews and giveaways.
How long have you been blogging?
My first post went up on 11/03/06
How did you get started?
To be honest, I don’t recall. I have some memory issues. I am sure someone said – you should have a blog! And off I went to find one.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
I do a lot of book reviews as I love to read. That is one of my biggest passions. Then each month I try to focus around a theme; March was organization, April was celebrating pets, June is going to be natural body care products. Other opportunities always pop up and if I feel my readers will benefit I offer them as well.
What was your favourite giveaway?
I don’t think I can pick one specific giveaway but I love giving books away because I think there is nothing better than sharing a great story and the love of reading.
Who does your blog appeal to?
Since my house is being built in an eco friendly way and my husband and I are trying to live as sustainable life as we can I know I have a lot of green readers and farmers. I also have lots of readers. In addition since I do still make my jewelry in my ah-hem spare time I have gem lovers and other artisans.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
I am in the process of getting it more organized with features running on regular days. For example; I just started a new feature called Before the Farm where I am sharing stories of my life before I settled into farm life. I also have my Baking for the Firemen tales every two weeks where I demonstrate what I have made for my husband’s volunteers – he is the fire chief in our small town. Plus there is the ongoing Yurtgress which is the chronicle of my house building. The house is a yurt which is a circular, very open style building. I will of course, continue with the reviews and giveaways!
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
Finding the quality giveaways for my readers. As I am sure every new review and giveaway blog learns it is challenging – not to mention quite a bit of work – to find the products to offer. Plus the time management. I am coming into my busy time as garden season approaches and this will be the first summer as a full fledged review and giveaway blog so that will be very challenging for me.
What do you love about blogging?
I have found that despite hating to write all through school I have now discovered a love of telling a tale. Plus it’s fun to have access to all the great books I now read and then I get to share them with people. Not to mention some really great products.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
Erm, Blogger drives me crazy some times but I am not in a position to pay for web hosting so it and I just do battle.
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?
To the bloggers entering: please, PLEASE, read and follow the rules. I really hate when I have to delete entries. I also get people putting all their entries on one comment and that diminishes their chances of winning.
For newbie review bloggers – just keep plugging along. Most emails you send out will be ignored but then you get that one positive response that will make your day. Join a group like The Product Review Place or Mom Relations, Book Bloggers or Global Influence so you can learn from the experience of the masters. Like Stacie here!
Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
Oh my! I visit so many blogs it’s hard to narrow down a list – I read several book blogs daily; The Burton Review is excellent for lovers of historical fiction. Since I am close to moving into my house I drink in the advice at AB Home Interiors. I always check out what is new at Just Another New Blog. And of course I love visiting here for your great giveaways and posts!
