Title: The Secrets of Newberry

Author: Victor McGlothin

About the Book:

For Ivory Bones Arcineaux and Julian Bynote, life in 1950s New Orleans couldn’t be sweeter. Friends since they met in an illegal gambling house in Newberry, Louisiana, they have their pick of all the fine women, good food, and hot nights they can handle. They seem to have it made-especially Julian who begins to make a new life for himself after meeting the beautiful, classy Magnolia Garbo at a social. But both men are about to find out that letting the good times roll can be deadly when a simple robbery goes wrong and Julian witnesses Bones murdering a man in cold blood.

My Review:

Ivory “Bones” Arcineaux and Hampton Bynote are brought together when there is a raid on an illegal gambling ring. Set in the 1950’s, during a time when racial tensions were high, these 2 men of different races became unlikely friends. One man is white and the other is black. Their bond continues until one fateful night when a seemingly simple robbery goes awry and a murder takes place. One man watches as the other take someones life in cold blood… an important man in politics at that. {Not to mention a white man.}

I found this book very interesting and suspenseful. I also found myself connecting emotionally with the characters and their plights. The good times and the not so good. There is great character development and you really feel like you know these people. You just need to know what happens which makes it hard to put down and you get a feel for what it might have been like to live as a black man during a time when segregation was the word of the day. It’s a great summer read and one I would have no trouble recommending.

*I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this novel.*
