Blog Spotlight | Beautiful Calling

I am running a feature spotlighting other Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected]

Today I would like to welcome Jenn from Beautiful Calling. I had a chance to learn more about her blogs and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I’m Jenn; a Christian stay-at-home wife and mother. My husband and I were married 5 years ago this month in Sorrento, Italy. We have two little ones, Chloe (2007) and John (2008), both of whom where born at home with the help of a midwife. We also have a sweet little one awaiting us in heaven. We are seeking to live a simpler, more abundant life; believing less really is more. It’s been {and is!} a journey and we invite you to share it with us!

The best place to read about me is my About page. There is also 31 Things About Me (on my 31st Birthday), All About Me from A-Z and last years UBP post, a little about mommy with littles.

Please tell me about your blog.

I would not classify Beautiful Calling as a giveaway blog, though I do have giveaways regularly (with some great ones coming up this summer!). It is more a reflection of our everyday life. I share recipes we use, the faith we love, encouragement, home making tips and of course the trials we face. This blog is an honest record of my successes, failures and lessons learned (and the ones I am learning!). I write because I enjoy it; not because I have talent.  I pray that here you will find something helpful, encouraging or motivating! How long have you been blogging?

I reluctantly started blogging in February 2009 after several months of nudging by my husband. How did you get started? Oh, I guess I kind of gave that away in the question above. My husband has had a blog for over a decade and encouraged me to start one. I was hesitant because I am not all that smart when it comes to HTML or anything like that. I also wasn’t sure what I had to say or who on earth would want to read what I did write. My husband was such an encourager that I finally did start and love it!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

Right now, mostly baby and tot stuff since that is the season of life I am in. As my little ones (1, 3) get older, I imagine that the products will change to reflect that. Occasionally, there are reviews and giveaways for women.

What was your favorite giveaway?

That’s hard to say. I think the UVSkinz from last summer because they make awesome, functional products that make a difference and I love the company’s values. They are actually sponsoring another giveaway coming up this summer.

Who does your blog appeal to?

Probably mother of tots (0-5) since that is the season of life I am in and what I write about. But you know many things, like recipes, appeal to most!

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I suppose much the same as it has been. My blog is simply a reflection of our every day life. I’m always thrilled when my readership increases but that isn’t the ultimate goal. My blogging goal is to give an honest peek into our day to day life that someone somewhere may be encouraged, uplifted or helped in some way. Even in doing the reviews, it is to inform and help readers decide if it is something they would like to try or would find useful.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Honestly? The technical stuff. I loved the usability of blogger but my template would not work with it. I ended up switching to wordpress and now I still have a ton of broken links in my older posts {sigh}. One day I will find the time to fix them. Oh, and {blush} I’m afraid of twitter. Well, not afraid but I took a look once was intimidated; it looks confusing.

What do you love about blogging?

The connection with so many others. As a stay at home, I like to be at home. I find that my family and I are happiest when the bulk of my time is spent close to home {at least while they are so young}. With blogging, it gives me an outlet for my thoughts and ideas, it lets me connect with others, it enables me to be a part of a community where I find support and encouragement myself even as I try to support and encourage others.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Spam comments and giveaways that require you to become a follower or subscriber as the mandatory entry. I definitely think that subscribing warrants a bonus entry but don’t think it is nice to make it a requirement. I also don’t like daily tweets as an entry. I think once is plenty. But that’s just my humble opinion. I hope I don’t offend anyone by saying it..

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? Newbie review bloggers?

It only takes one entry to win. I use so whether you are the first commenter or the last, you have the same chance!

As for newbie review blogging advice? Don’t sell yourself out. Be honest, your readers trust you! Be bold; contact companies who have products you are interested in. You’ll get some no’s but you’ll also get some yeses too. Focus on the positive. {And I think I’m still kind of a newbie so keep that in mind as you read this!}

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.

  • eBabble
