Book Review | The White Bone

Title: The White Bone: A Novel

Author: Barbara Gowdy

My Review:

I was often caught smiling to myself as I was reading this novel… I was smiling because I kept forgetting that what I was reading about was a family of elephants~ not people.

This novel is so richly written and if I did not know better, I would think Ms. Gowdy had been an intricate part of the herd she was writing about and had “talked” to them personally.

As charming as the book is, I also found it very moving and sad by times. The herd is trying to reach the “Safe Place” away from poachers who are trying to kill them. Hearing about this from an elephants narrative is very moving in my opinion and brought me to tears on more than one occasion as I read.

The very first line in the prologue is Ms. Gowdy’s reference to the common phrase we all know~ “an elephant never forgets,” or at least that’s we have always been taught. Although there may be truth to the statement, the sad reality is revealed as soon as you start to take in the novel.

“If they live long enough they forget everything. Most of them don’t live that long. Nine out of ten are slaughtered in their prime, decades before their memories have started to drain…”

She refers to them as often being “heartbroken” and talks often of their feelings. The imagination it took to write this book is nothing short of remarkable if you ask me.

So dig into this novel and go on a magnificent journey with the herd and fall in love with these interesting and lovable creatures… the elephants. You will never think of them in the same way again.
