Author: Dr. Howard Shapiro and Chef Franklin Becker
When I originally decided to read and review Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss by Dr. Howard Shapiro and Chef Franklin Becker, I thought it would be a great book to read and share with my dad because my dad has diabetes. What I realized, however, is that is not just for people that are diabetic. On the cover the book also says “The Visual Program to Prevent and Control Diabetes”. Since my dad has diabetes, I then decided that it might be a great book to read for my own informaiton as well as to share with my dad.
The book begins by explaining why it is important to identify diabetes, the corelation between excessive weight and diabetes and the secret to healthy weight loss using the diabetic model of eating. The remainder of the book has a number of different strategies for helping to develop and understand healthy eating. It has visual comparison between food items with the same amount of calories, it has visual comparisons with dietary breakdowns of similar items to highlight the healthier choices (such as the difference between a beef patty, a chicken patty and a vegetarian patty), it shows how how changes to one aspect of a meal can change it into a healthier meal (such as taking 2 slices of pizza and substituting other items for 1 slice will add 12 grams of fibre) and provides other information as well as some recipes.
I found this book easy to read and very informative. I liked the visual component because I think it added to the information provided to drive home the messages that were being presented. As I know that my dad is a visual learner, I think showing him this book and using some of the comparative photos will help him to understand the changes he can make to help him obtain the glucose levels he needs to have a healthier lifestyle.
