Blog Spotlight | Cake Walk

I am running a feature spotlighting other Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected]

Today I would like to welcome Melanie from Cake Walk. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I recently graduated with my Ph.D. in biomedical science at the University of Florida. I studied obesity, which is ironic because I LOVE to bake and really got into cake decorating about halfway through my research. Aside from cakes and baking, I love scrapbooking, taking photos of flowers, running, and hanging out with my handsome hubby.

Please tell me about your blog.

On my blog, I like to do more than just share photos of cakes I’ve recently decorated. Instead, I try to include tutorials on a variety of cake decorating techniques – from the very basic to the very advanced. I also give tutorials on other things in the kitchen, like a favorite appetizer or dessert. And, of course, I throw in a few other off-topic things that make me smile!

How long have you been blogging?

I started my blog in September 2008.

How did you get started?

I took Wilton cake decorating courses at a local Michael’s craft store in April 2008. I had so much fun and got a lot of compliments on my cakes so I decided to start a blog. The blog was mostly a way for my family and friends to see my cakes, and it’s blossomed from there!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

I only feature products that I would personally use and recommend, which can vary from personal health care products to cake decorating tools.

What was your favourite giveaway?

My favorite was the last one I did – Organic Cotton Candy from Spun City! I asked people to comment on a flavor they’d like to see in cotton candy, and people were so creative! I really enjoyed reading the responses and it has inspired me to attempt homemade cotton candy in the near future!

Who does your blog appeal to?

My hope is that it appeals to just about anyone. Like I said, I include photos of cakes and basic kitchen tutorials that the average person might enjoy. But I also give detailed cake decorating tutorials that I hope even experienced decorators find useful.

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I hope to continue blogging just the way I am now. If I ever open my own cake decorating shop, I’ll use the blog to showcase my latest cakes and blog about the fun I have in making them.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

The biggest challenge by far is coming up with a way to photograph the tutorials. Imagine trying to stir hot sugar on the stove while holding the camera and trying to position an external light source in just the right spot. You need four hands! I now have 2 tripods, an awesome external light, and an infrared remote for my digital SLR camera. Seems to be working!

What do you love about blogging?

I love the comments from readers! Whether it’s just a quick hello or a question about a technique I showed, they’re what keep me going!

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Hm…I really don’t!

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?

Just have fun!

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
