U by Kotex Blog Tour
When I was a tween, my mom borrowed books from the library for me to read and learn about menstruation. I was an avid reader so I guess she figured this was the best way to give me the info. I did learn from the books (which were geared towards girls my age) although I had already learned what a period was from my friends at school. At age 11, we were all excited to get our periods and to be able to wear bras. Its funny now when I think back about it, but we were all wanting to grow up so quickly.
I got my first period when I was 11 years old. It was the summer before grade 6 and I was having a sleepover at my friend, Carla’s house. Carla and I were playing Barbies and pretending that our Barbies were getting their periods. The next morning, I woke up with mine! Carla’s mom went to the store and bought me some pads and it was no big deal. I wasn’t at all upset and continued to spend the rest of the day at Carla’s house. In fact, I felt proud that I was the first of my friends to get her period. They all were soon to follow after me.
With my own girls- Olivia in particular- I have told her what a period is and used all the proper terms. I am not embarrassed at all discussing this with her. Its just a fact of nature and is nothing that she needs to be worried, ashamed or scared about. She knows its all about growing up and becoming a women. For me, I believe in being open and honest and not making a big deal out of it. That way she won’t be freaked out when the day does come.
