Blog Spotlight | Cake Mom

I am running a feature spotlighting other Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at si[email protected]

Today I would like to welcome Jamie from Cake. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I work full time in the behavioral health field. I have two beautiful children, Jackson (6) and Isabella (4). I married my high school sweetheart and we have been happily married for 9 years. I enjoy spending time with my kids and dogs, going to see live theater, and baking, of course.

Please tell me about your blog.

My blog focuses on my trials and tribulations as a wannabe baker. I do weekly baking-related product reviews, teach my readers baking and decorating techniques, show off my baking “projects” and feature giveaways.

How long have you been blogging?

1 month! (January 2010)

How did you get started?

I have been reading blogs for over a year. One day, I was reading one and I just had this thought “hey maybe I should do this too”. The month before I started my blog, I was baking non-stop. I was often fielding questions about baking techniques from friends, family, and coworkers and thought it may be fun to write about this topic. I have always enjoyed baking, but I just took a few cake decorating classes this past fall and have been addicted to making decorative treats ever since!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

Although I will occasionally feature “every-day” products, I really like to stay true to the theme of my blog. So, I like to feature baking products and kid’s baking products as well as baked goods that other companies have created.

What was your favourite giveaway?

My favorite was the Lucky Leaf Giveaway. I was given two cans of Lucky Leaf pie filling, a recipe for a cherry cake, measuring spoons and a heart shaped pan to make a Valentine’s Day cake. The best part is they gave away the heart shaped pan to 10 readers as well. I love that I can help make so many people happy with one giveaway! Plus, I really liked that I was given an “assignment” to create a specific cake by Lucky Leaf. I live for challenges like this!

Who does your blog appeal to?

My intended audience is women who love to bake, are interested in baking, enjoy reading about baking, or maybe just like eating sweets!

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I am going to try to stay true to the theme of the blog. Since I am very hopeful that my cake decorating skills continue to grow, I hope that my blog and what I can offer the readers also continues to expand.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Time. Working full time takes up 50 hours a week and my kids demand all my attention when I get home. It is also very important that I attend to my marriage. Balancing my work, family, baking, and blogging is something I have not been able to figure out yet. I certainly hope that I can perfect this soon because I am getting very tired!

What do you love about blogging?

I have always enjoyed writing. Journaling helped get through the difficult teenage years. I blogged briefly on MySpace about my past weight struggles and found it very motivating. I also blogged temporarily as a way to help grieve the death of my father several years ago. I love that other people are interested in going through a journey with me. Whether it is weight loss, grief, or baking, it is amazing to see how alike we all are and how fun it is to connect with others all over the world who share a passion for similar things.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

I can live with it, but it does kind of irritate me when bloggers post something like “sorry, I am too sick to blog today”. If you are too sick, you don’t owe anyone an explanation. Stay in bed and take care of yourself!

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway?

Use all those extra entries to your advantage. While I am still trying to establish my blog, I am offering numerous entries for things like subscribing, putting my button on your blog, etc. When I win on other blogs, it is almost always the “extra” entry comments that get picked!
newbie review bloggers? I am a newbie review blogger, so I guess I need the advice!
