Today I would like to welcome Susan from Susan Heim on Parenting. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
I’m a work-at-home mom of four sons who writes and edits books! I specialize in parenting, twins and multiples, women’s and Christian issues. I’m a longtime editor for the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and the author of seven books, including Boosting Your Baby’s Brain Power; It’s Twins! Parent-to-Parent Advice from Infancy Through Adolescence; and three Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
Please tell me about your blog.
My blog, Susan Heim on Parenting, is a logical extension of my parenting books. I share information about raising children, from infancy through college-age. I also do a lot of family-oriented product reviews and giveaways.
How long have you been blogging?
I’ve been blogging since September 2006!
How did you get started?
I wanted to be able to share parenting information with families on an ongoing basis, not just through my books. New information and products are always coming out, so starting a blog was a great way to stay current in my field and keep people up-to-date on family-oriented information.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?
I’ll feature just about anything that appeals to parents or kids and that I recommend. This might include books, baby items, jewelry, clothes, websites, household items, cleaning products, and much more for adults. I also feature toys, video games, board games, sports-related items, books, music and more for kids.
What was your favourite giveaway?
That’s a tough question! After blogging for more than three years, I’ve had the privilege of being able to review so many great products. I really can’t pin down a favorite giveaway!
Who does your blog appeal to?
My blog is written for families with children of all ages. I have a son in college, one in high school, and twins in kindergarten, so I write about all age levels.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
I hope to include bigger and better giveaways. I also tend to be a fairly private person, so I’ve been thinking about being more open about my personal life. We’ll see.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
Finding time to blog is definitely the most challenging. I have a full-time career and four sons. I’m usually writing late at night, as well as when the kids are in school. I always have topics or products to write about, but it’s very time-consuming to write a really good article or do a thorough review.
What do you love about blogging?
I tend to be an introvert and don’t enjoy social situations, so blogging and social media are a great way for me to meet and connect with people from the comfort of my own home. I’ve made some wonderful connections online, and I’m always thrilled to hear from people who enjoy reading my blog or my books.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
I get aggravated when people leave comments where it’s obvious that they’re just trying to plant a link to their own site or promote a product I haven’t reviewed. I delete comments that aren’t directly relevant to the post they’re on.
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaways? Newbie review bloggers?
This may sound basic, but I’ve had to re-draw winners so many times because people forget to leave their email address or don’t have it on their Blogger page. I always feel bad about having to pick someone else, but what can I do? So, please don’t forget that very important step!
For newbie bloggers, I’d advise them to edit their work! Blogs look really unprofessional when they’re filled with grammatical and spelling errors, and they’re less likely to attract PR reps looking for reviews. So, take the time to read through your work, and include pictures and descriptive headlines. I’d also advise bloggers to include an email subscription feature on their site because it will keep people coming back!
