I am very picky about my laundry detergent. Always have been and even more so since I had Sadie. I always seem to have 3 different bottles on the go…one for regular laundry, one for Kendall’s work clothes and one for Sadie’s clothes. I try and buy the perfume, dye free stuff but I do enjoy a scent now and again. With all the new green detergent out there its time to make a switch for the better for us and the environment.
I received a bag of soap nuts from Hazelaid. I was very curious to see what they were all about as I had never heard tell of them. Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree (Sapindus Mukorossi), similar to the lychee. When the nuts get wet, they release saponin, a natural cleaner, making them great for washing clothes. They are nature’s own answer to chemical-free personal, laundry and household cleaning. They are environmentally friendly, sustainably produced, biodegradable and compostable.
There is no need for anyone with nut allergies to be concerned. They are ideal for people with allergies to chemical detergents and synthetic perfumes, for children’s clothes and for pets. For people suffering from eczema or psoriasis, they will complement your current treatments. They are organically grown in Nepal.
I followed the directions to use the soap nuts as a laundry detergent. All you do is place four soap nuts in the small cotton bag that it comes with and tie it closed. If you wash in cold water, it’s best to soak the soap nuts in their cotton bag in a bit of warm water prior to throwing them (and the soaking water) in the wash. The warm water helps the soap nuts to release the saponin which is what washes the clothes. The bag of soap nuts is good for 4-5 loads of laundry. When the shells are thin and dry its time to put new ones in the bag. I was very impressed with the results and did the BIG test of washing Kendalls work clothes in my next load. Again…VERY IMPRESSED!!! Kendall is a mechanic and his clothes are FULL of dirt, grim and grease at the end of the day. Everything was clean, soft and I was a happy lady. I highly recommend trying the soap nuts and will be getting more.
Soap nuts retail for $1.95 for a sample. (4-5 loads) 500g for $22. 95 (150-200 loads) and 1kg bag for $39.95. (300-400 loads). Pretty good deal eh? Check them out today and read all about these amazing soap nuts. Who knew???
