Blog Spotlight: Woven by Words

I am running a feature spotlighting other Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected]

Today I would like to welcome Mimi from Woven by Words. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I’m a single mom of 4 kids. My oldest is 18 & a Freshman in college and my youngest is 6 & a 1st grader. I’m the oldest of 3 siblings, although you’d never know it, definitely not a firstborn type personality! I was robbed I tell ya. I moved to MN 11 yrs ago and will probably live in this frozen tundra for the rest of my life. What was I thinking? I love reading and blogging.

Please tell me about your blog.

My blog is Woven by Words. It started off as a blog to review books. Then I started giving away those books. Ah, books are hard to part with, but I love sharing the authors & their writing with others. I only recently started doing product reviews, but I have a long way to go before I make it to where companies will be contacting me. πŸ™‚ I’ll keep plugging away. I wish I had more wisdom to share with other women. After being a mom for 18+ yrs you’d think I’d have something more to offer. That is definitely something that means a lot to me and I hope to be able to lasso it!

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since February 2007, nearly 2 yrs. I’ll have to come up with something for my blogoversary.

How did you get started?

Author Angela Hunt shared with our Heavenly Daze Yahoo Group (created by her and author Lori Copeland in conjunction with a series of the same name) about another Yahoo Group called ACFW. They’re mostly a group of authors or those who want to be authors. I decided to check them and found out they were always giving away books. WHAT? People were giving away books? I wanted to learn how to do that. That meant I had to start…a…b-l-o-g!! EEK I had a go at it but didn’t tell anyone with my first couple of posts. Then I asked a couple of authors I had met at the ACFW Yahoo Group to look at what I had done. They were very kind in sharing their thoughts. It blossomed from there.

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

Until October-ish I had only reviewed and given away books. I had NO clue that people were doing product giveaways! Where have I been the last 2 yrs? I started contacting companies that I thought might fit my blog and was able to have a few agree. It hasn’t been easy trying to “compete” with the rest of the blogs who have hundreds and thousands of followers! hahahaha I’ve just recenly reached 140 followers. Thank you for being 140. *grin*

What was your favourite giveaway?

Goodness, I have a couple that I personally liked although they might not have received the greatest number of comments. I liked the Guitar Praise giveaway because it’s such a positive alternative to Guitar Hero or Rock Band. I also loved the Glo Bible Software. I personally loved using the program. Wish my dinosaur of a computer would’ve uploaded it, but my daughter was the lucky one.

Who does your blog appeal to?

My hope is that one day it will appeal to everyone. For the most part I think it appeals to lady readers, since book reviews have been my biggest feature. I have very few men visit my blog, but I’ve tried to make some of my product reviews gender neutral. I’ve even tried to appeal to men with a few of the books I’ve reviewed. I think with product reviews, they will probably appeal to everyone!! That’s my hope.

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I will continue to do book reviews on a regular basis, but I’m hoping companies and individuals will see that I’m a great person to review their family friendly products. I have a big range of ages with my kids, although I’m out of the baby stages (frowny face). I would also love to do some pet product reviews. We have a dog and 3 cats and we’ve had horses & still go out to the barn weekly.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

Oh, there are a lot of challenges. The biggest? Maybe finding a balance with the amount of time I spend blogging compared to the time I spend with my kids. I find myself failing badly! It hasn’t been easy. Being “creative” and I use that term loosely in regards to my blogging, takes a LOT of time and thought. Blogging also takes away time I could be reading the books I need to review. Sending out emails to company after company without hearing back from 95% of them is discouraging. I need to prove myself. πŸ™‚

What do you love about blogging?

I love the people who visit my blog regularly (and the visitors). I’ve built a type of online friendship with many of them. I truly appreciate when people comment when I’m not having a giveaway and I’m just sharing. It makes the time I put in very worth it! I wouldn’t be doing anything with my blog without those who visit.

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

Boy, I don’t know. I’m pretty laid back. I do things like use smiley faces πŸ™‚ and such. I’m trying to be a serious blogger, but I’m not anal about it…or about much of anything.

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway?Β

Please, oh please, leave a way to contact you! I try and do everything I can to make sure it’s visible to leave an email address or have it in their profile page. Unfortunately, it still doesn’t happen and I can’t enter them. I’m so sorry!!! newbie review bloggers? Keep on keepin’ on. It can become very discouraging not getting the comment numbers you hope for in giveaways, but be thankful for those who visited! Plug away at finding people/companies willing to work with you to review/giveaway their product and don’t forget to let them know how thankful you are!! Find a way to be set apart from the other sites out there. What can you do differently?

Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.Β

Women Living Well is a wonderful site encouraging us to live godly lives. I’m always full of good intentions. Two of a Kind Working on a Full House has everything. Under The Golden Apple Tree has really inspiring posts and I love her Round-Up links! And finally, The Fashionable Housewife. I may actually exhibit some girly-ness from this sites helpful tips! All these and other awesome sites/blogs can be found on the right sidebar of my blog. One that I follow and love for everything about it is The Pioneer Woman. Ree Drummond is amazing! I don’t have a link on my page because she doesn’t have one. πŸ™‚
