Blog Spotlight | Northern Mama

I am running a feature spotlighting other Canadian Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected]

Today I would like to welcome Angela from Northern Mama. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…

Please tell me about yourself.

I’m a crazy stay at home mom of three. Though I’m not sure I can be classified as a SAHM now as I will be substitute teaching in the New Year. I’m one of those moms who still hasn’t completely decided what I am going to do when I grow up! I mean I always knew from High school onward that I was going to be an Archaeologist. I have an Honours Bachelors Degree with a double major in archaeology and anthropology but as in most acedemic careers a bachelors is just not enough and I was tired at the time of student life. I moved on by joining my husband in receiving a Bachelors of Education with the idea I would teach until I was ready to return to school for a masters…maybe even a Ph.D but well, life got in the way! We lived 8 years in the arctic among the Inuit–a truly life transforming experience! Four moves and three kids later I am waiting for my youngest to be in school full time so I can perhaps “find myself”. I love to write and have always thought of writing a book that could be my path but for now blogging is my forum!

Please tell me about your blog.

Northern Mama was originally concieved as a personal blog promoting northern issues and other topics near and dear to her heart–eco-friendly living, life-long learning, and healthy parenting–it quickly evolved into much, much more. I have loved to write since I found I had a knack for it in elelmentary school and blogging was my way of becoming an “author” with three kids running around me. Northern Mama is now a blog which markets and promotes an eclectic mix of eco-friendly, socially responsible, and family friendly products with flair and creativity! Northern Mama is not chic, it’s not a baby blog, nor a book blog but rather a regular Canadian woman’s guide to the things she loves and knows others will too! ECLECTIC, FUNKY, and just a bit DIFFERENT Northern Mama is simply unique in it’s variety and appeal.

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since February 2009 so….wow 10 months already!

How did you get started?

I really have a few friends to thank. I have a couple blogging friends in the arctic who have maintained personal blogs for years but a dear friend here in Saskatchewan introduced me to the world of review blogging. As I entered blog giveaways and read the personal blogs of so many I came to the realization that this could be a great starting point for my writing. I feel if I can write regularly on my blog I can eventually discipline myself to write a book…I hope! It was blogs such as yours that inspired me and I thank you for that!

What kinds of products do you feature on your blog?

As I’ve said I’m eclectic so you never know what your going to find at Northern Mama but I do like to focus on eco-friendly and educational products whenever possible! I’m a socially responsible individual and want to instill this in my children. It is this I hope my readers see Northern Mama representing!

What was your favourite giveaway?

Tough question! I honestly love giving away great books {though I know these are not as popular as certain other giveaways}. I do get excited about big giveaways like the Dyson I am supposed to be giving away this year!

Who does your blog appeal to?

I think my blog appeals to parents of young children primarily but also book lovers. I also have a fairly prominent northern following and I hope to soon to be able to stay true to them by spending more time again writing about my life in the north!

What direction do you see your blog going in the future?

I want to continue reviewing fabulous products. I hope to find even more original eco-friendly products to feature and expand to include more popular items. What I truly wish to do however is to find time for even more personal and issue-based posts. I am working on adding a new reviewer to my site currently! Her name is Nichole and she is my closest friend and supporter! Nichole is another “Northern mama”–she too lived with her family in the arctic for years, though she now lives in Nova Scotia. She is my trusted side kick and I am so excited to be introducing her to the world of blogging and sharing Northern Mama!

What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?

I think the the most difficult thing has been learning and blogging in a bubble! It has been very difficult finding out what I need to know without asking people who lets face it are not eager to help. I have encountered fabulous bloggers over this past 10 months but I have also been through some online drama that is frightening. I honestly find that some bloggers are less than understanding and extremely competitive and sadly cruel. I have tried to blog without influence after a few rude awakenings starting out!

What do you love about blogging?

Honestly, I love the writing. I especially love when I am truly inspired by a product or topic and I feel a free flow of emotional rambling! I also love that I have met some fabulous bloggers and PR representatives which have made me feel strength at times when I truly required the pep talk or pick me up!

Do you have a blogging pet peeve?

BLOGGER PMS! Blogger can be a delightfully unforgiving program/platform to blog on and has had me pulling my hair out more times than I can count! I just cannot envision changing platforms at this time though and starting virtually from scratch.

Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?

Advice for readers entering giveaways–follow the entry requirements carefully and write a separate comment for each entry! I really do despise having to delete or forfeit someones comment because they didn’t follow the directions. It’s a real bummer!

As for newbie bloggers. Find another blogger or group of bloggers you can trust for good advice, support and assistance. If you don’t already have friends in the blogosphere perhaps join a mom blog network or hey contact a blogger you have followed regularly and feel comfortable with. A blogging friend is a great asset to learning the ropes!
