Blog Spotlight | This Bird’s Day
I am running a feature spotlighting other Canadian Review & Giveaway Blogs. If you have one and would like to be featured, please email me at [email protected]
Today I would like to welcome Sheri from This Bird’s Day. I had a chance to learn more about her blog and here’s what she had to say…
Please tell me about yourself.
I am the very proud mom of a 17-month old girl and wife to an amazing husband. We relocated to Edmonton in August 2005. I write a monthly column for my community newspaper about saving money and I am a coupon clipping fanatic.
Please tell me about your blog.
I post about saving money, coupon clipping, finding freebies and deals in Canada and/or for Canadians. My only prerequisite for everything I mention on my site is that it must be available to Canadians. I used to hate navigating around and finding a great contest that I would love to enter, or finding an amazing deal only to then find out it was available to the US only. So I make sure that Canadians can access every part of my site without worrying if they are eligible for anything.
How long have you been blogging?
I have actually been blogging since September 2005. I originally started a personal blog to keep our families updated on our move and to show pictures of what was going on in our lives. Once our daughter was born, we closed that blog down to family viewing only. Once we became parents we realized that we had way too much information about our family available to anyone who wanted to see it. Once that site was locked, I missed the interaction that a public blog provided. I decided to begin another blog to meet people and share what I know about saving money.
How did you get started?
Once my site was up and running, I came to a point where I had too many coupons and I didn’t want to throw them away. I decided to hold a big coupon giveaway and it went over really well. From there I met a few people who were doing reviews and giveaways and I decided to try it out for myself. Being new, I started small with a company that offered a blog sponsorship program. That went over well and I began contacting some companies as I found them and went from there.
What kinds of products do you feature on your blog? All of my reviews are family friendly. I have featured products for men, women and children. My husband has also been a great help in assisting me with some of my reviews. I have done book reviews, DVDs, computer software, computer hardware, tools, jewelery, kids books, cds, learning tools and more.
What was your favourite giveaway?
I have a few favorites, it is so hard to pick just one. I would have to say that my favorite giveaways are the ones where I get to learn a lot about my readers through their comments. I recently wrapped up my Holiday Festival titled the 12 Days of Christmas and the mandatory requirements of some of those giveaways got my readers sharing personal stories with me. I read every comment, and I really enjoy the ones where I learn a little something about one of my readers.
Who does your blog appeal to?
Mostly, Canadians. I try to be as general as I can be so if you are Canadian, you will get something out of visiting my site. Whether it is a money savings tip, how to find a freebie, or a giveaway, I try to put something in there for everyone. If you are located in the US, you can still enter most of my giveaways, but you will have to read to see if you are eligible on a per giveaway basis.
What direction do you see your blog going in the future?
This is a great question. I have been thinking about this for a couple of months now. I know I want to make a couple of changes, but I don’t quite know what they are yet. I will be redesigning my main page in the new year a slight bit but that is as far as I have gotten. I will always keep it to Canadian-friendly content though. That won’t change.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced so far with your blog?
My biggest challenge so far has been my return to work. Almost 4 months ago, I went back to a full time position and it has been challenging to keep up with my posts. I try to post as much as I can in the evening after my daughter goes to sleep. I then set it to autopost during the day while I am at work. I have also used many of my lunch hours to catch up on my site and emails. I also end all of my giveaways in the evening at 9:00pm my time. This gives us enough time to put our daughter to sleep, tidy the house, then I can log on, draw my winner and I still have enough time to watch a TV show with my husband.
What do you love about blogging?
I love the people I get to interact with on a daily basis. From readers to sponsors, I love meeting new people and making new friendships.
Do you have a blogging pet peeve?
I don’t have any pet peeves about blogging – yet!
Do you have any advice for the readers entering your giveaway? newbie review bloggers?
For readers entering my giveaways, my only piece of advice is to read the giveaway entry requirements and if there is a mandatory requirement, to make sure it is done. I draw my winners using a random number generator, then check to make sure that they completed the mandatory requirement. It is only fair to everyone else who entered that took the time to do it correctly.
Tell me some of your favourite blogs that you read.
My favorites to visit are always Canadian blogs. Here’s a small list of favorites:
and of course stacievaughansblog.blogspot.com
