Little Stars Bedtime Cards Review
Getting my daughter to bed is never a simple ordeal. Baths, pj’s, teeth and then a story (or two…), drinks of water, it just never seems to end and gets downright stressful. This is where Little Stars Bedtime Cards come in and offer a gentle, one-on-one bedtime ritual that both parents and children can enjoy. As parents, we all want our kids to go to sleep feeling comforted, secure and loved, yet by the end of the day, moms and dads are usually zapped out of energy themselves! What are the Little Stars Bedtime Cards? Well, these are a set of cards are geared towards children ages 3 to 6 years old made specifically for use just before your child goes to bed. Each card includes a picture of one of the cute and cuddly Little Stars characters, a simple affirmative statement (eg. I like who I am) and a list of discussion points that help parents open up rapport with their child. Children identify with the Little Stars characters and their feelings and this gives them the opportunity to explore their own feelings in a fun and positive way.
These cards are super simple to use. The parent chooses one card from the deck and tucks it under the child’s pillow sometime during the day. When you tuck your little one into bed, they can “discover” the card and then the parent and child can look at the card and go over the discussion points on the back. There is also a sweet goodnight poem that you can close the ritual with.
Shannon McQuillan and Linda Komori, both of Kamloops, BC (go Canada!) developed the Little Stars Bedtime Cards after seeing the benefits of having a positive bedtime routine with their own children and wanted to give other parents the tools to do the same with their own children. The Little Stars Bedtime Cards was chosen for a Creative Child Magazine Top Choice of the Year Award in 2008. Feedback has been really positive from parents who are now using the cards on a daily basis.

I used the Little Stars Bedtime Cards with my 4 year old daughter, Bridget. It is always such an event to try to get her tucked in for the night and seems like she tries to prolong her going to sleep as long as she can. I started leaving a card on her pillow which she found when I went to tuck her. The first 3 cards are introductions to the Little Stars Characters and it will say what each character likes to do and some of his favourite things. Bridget really liked these cute little characters and when I asked her a few things about each, she remembered the points I read about what some of their favourite things were!
I thought the cards with the affirmative statements like “I like to dream” were a great idea. The questions on the back helped me to ask Bridget the right questions to expand on each statement. For example, with the dream statement card, we talked about times when she had a good dream and whether she ever had a daydream before. I think these cards helped to further build our mother daughter bond and actually, Bridget began to look forward to bedtime so that we can sit and “do the cards” as she puts it. She liked looking at the bright, colourful and fun illustrations on the card too.
I believe that adding the Little Stars Bedtime Cards made bedtime more enjoyable for both Bridget and I and think they are a great idea for parents to help make bedtime a more positive experience! They are very reasonably priced and US customers can take advantage of the exchange rate as the price is in Canadian funds.
